Johanna Carrington never got the chance to own a dog while growing up in a war-torn orphanage in Germany.

Since then, she has been making up for the lost time.

The 100-year-old Californian always adored dogs as pets, including a charming but busy period when she and her late husband had eight Pekingese. She recently adopted Gucci, an 11-year-old Chihuahua mix.

“I just love him,” Carrington said.

After Carrington’s previous dog, Rocky passed away, her home felt eerily silent. They were concerned that a shelter might not allow a woman of her senior age to adopt a pet when she mentioned it to her daughter Debbie Carrington.

Thankfully, one of their Moss Beach neighbors works as a volunteer for Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco and felt the group might be able to assist. It turned out that Gucci, then known as Gnocchi, had just been saved from a hoarding situation involving 22 dogs. The little puppy seems prepared to live alone in a home where he could receive a lot of love and care.

Eddie Martinez, Johanna Carrington’s carer, promised to walk Gucci every day and assist with his care as a condition of the adoption. Gucci’s foster mom drove the little dog to meet Carrington on September 2, and the latter made himself at home right away.

“He came to the house like he’d been here before. It was remarkable,” Carrington said. “He saw me sitting on my chair, jumped up on me, and sat on my lap. He made himself very, very comfortable. He was just our baby right away.”

She has given her new friend “oodles and oodles” of toys that he enjoys fetching, and she also massages his back as they both watch TV. Gucci enjoys creating a warm nest in their bed’s covers at night.

Carrington hopes to have a good time with Gucci this December as she turns 101. She “absolutely” believes that spending time with dogs is one of the secrets to a long, happy life, even if she attributes her longevity to a healthy lifestyle (she has never had a cigarette or even a sip of alcohol).

“Animals bring so much happiness to our home,” she said. “It’s unbelievable.”

Gucci was not a problem because he was well-behaved and still energetic enough to use the stairs in Carrington’s home. He appeared to be the kind of dog who would enjoy living alone in a house.

“He’s a very soulful little guy,” Ensor said. “It really is a matchmaking process.”

Using technology to navigate the adoption process is one way that family, friends, neighbors, and caretakers can assist seniors who want to adopt dogs, according to Ensor. Many animal rescue organizations have used social media, especially during the pandemic, to connect adoptable pets with people. These connections have included virtual meet-and-greets and home inspections via FaceTime or Zoom.

“Helping the prospective senior adopter handle the technology can be the first step,” she said.

Debbie Carrington has found that helping her mother adopt Gucci from Muttville through the Seniors for Seniors program has been very rewarding. The elderly dog was already housebroken, so they do not have to worry about messes, and since he is toothless, they won’t need to set aside money for additional dental care.

But mostly, it is “heartwarming” to witness the pair’s close relationship.

“After she lost her other dog, it was kind of sad here,” Debbie Carrington said. “It was quiet and sad, and then Gucci brought joy into the house. Laughing about him running around and doing funny things, and then also him sleeping on her lap with her while she’s in her recliner or sleeping in her bed, it’s just making her very happy.”

Kimberly Still has been a nurse for four years, and she loves helping people and forming connections with her patients. Yet, she never expected one patient to change her life so drastically.

When Still was caring for a terminally ill woman at Northside Hospital Gwinnett in Georgia, the patient worried about what would happen to her Chihuahua mix Jax when she passed. So, Still promised she would make sure the dog was cared for. Before Still knew it, she was adopting Jax and falling in love with him. The woman passed away peacefully, knowing her furry friend was in good hands.

A Woman’s Dying Wish

The patient Still cared for didn’t have any kids or family members close by, so her dog was all she had. She talked about Jax often and worried he wouldn’t have a good home after she passed.

In the patient’s final days, some family members traveled into town. When she passed away, they surrendered Jax to a shelter. Still knew that wasn’t what the woman wanted for her dog, so she grew worried.

“I was very worried that he was not going to be given a good chance and possibly be put down if he didn’t get out of the shelter,” Still said.

So, Still went to the shelter and adopted Jax. She hadn’t been looking to adopt a dog, but it was like fate for her.

Jax Becomes Family!

Still has another small dog, and luckily, the two quickly became friends. Still also formed a special bond with Jax, and she’s grateful that she stepped up to give him a new home.

“I was like, I am never going to get rid of him. He was so sweet. He is one of the most loving dogs ever,” Still said.

Jax is also a great reminder to Still of why she’s a nurse. She said the people she cares for need to feel heard and know that they’re important to someone, and Jax was the key to her one patient’s heart.

The DAISY Foundation, an organization that recognizes nurses, was so impressed by Still’s actions that they awarded her the DAISY Foundation Award. The award is a way to honor her hard work and dedication to her patients.

Still knows that not every nurse can adopt their patient’s dogs, but she’s grateful that she got the opportunity. Not only did she grant her patient’s final wish, but Jax and the patient have made her life more fulfilling.

“I could have never guessed the connection that you develop with some people when you take care of them,” Still said.

About a month ago, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) responded to a call about a dog trapped in a hot car. At the time, they suspected that the dog had been stranded in the vehicle for over two hours. After further research, the ASPCA announced that they believe the dog was actually in the car for 24 hours.

The outside temperature was in the mid-80s that day, which can reach over 100 degrees in a parked vehicle in just ten minutes. The dog would’ve perished if people hadn’t expressed concern for him. His recovery was long, but now, he has found his happily ever after.

Fighting for His Life

Several caring New Yorkers called the police when they spotted a fluffy white dog in a hot car. The car was off, and the windows were closed with the dog trapped inside, wearing a leash.

Members of the NYPD 19th Precinct gathered around the car and recorded the rescue as it was happening. One officer broke the glass on the passenger window and reached in to unlock the car. The car alarm went off for a few seconds but then stopped as the officer opened one of the back doors to get to the dog.

“Yesterday’s afternoon temps hovered in the mid 80’s & on an 85° day, it only takes 10 mins for the inside of a car to reach a deadly 102°! It’s prohibited to leave an animal unattended in a car under these dangerous conditions—thankfully the pup was rescued & is being cared for,” the NYPD 19th Precinct wrote on Twitter.

The officers brought the dog to the ASPCA Animal Recovery Center in Manhattan. He spent a month there receiving medical and behavioral treatment. Then, he was ready for adoption.

Officer Adopts Dog

The dog, who is an American Eskimo Dog now known as Snow, found his perfect family right away. Officer Aruna Maharaj with the NYPD fell in love with Snow during the rescue, so she kept in touch with the ASPCA during his recovery.

“From the moment Officer Maharaj was involved in this case, she knew Snow was special,” the ASPCA said. “She immediately brought him into her car with the air conditioner blasting, where he sat on her lap, licked her face, and wouldn’t move from her company.”

Officer Maharaj officially adopted Snow once he went through all his necessary care. Snow has adjusted well to his new family and even gets along with his new cat sibling. He loves having a large yard to run around in, and he walks to the park with his family regularly. He’s living the dream!

The NYPD hasn’t mentioned anything about Snow’s previous owner, but hopefully, they’ve been punished for leaving Snow to die in that hot car. No dog deserves to go through that.

It’s never easy to find a new home for a dog, but it’s especially hard when it’s due to their owner passing away. The dog not only has to deal with the heartbreak of losing their loving owner but has to find someone else to care for them.

It can be a difficult transition — but recently one dog found a perfect new home, thanks to a very caring nurse.

Kim Still is a nurse at Northside Hospital Gwinnett in Gwinnett County, Georgia. One of her patients she cared for was an elderly, terminally ill woman, with whom she formed a close connection.

As the end neared, the woman had one big concern: what would happen to her beloved dog, a chihuahua named Jax, after she died.

“She didn’t have any kids. She didn’t have any family close by. So all she really had was this dog,” Kim told WSB-TV.

Making things worse, the family told Kim to surrender the dog to a shelter when the patient died. “I was very worried that he was not going to be given a good chance, and possibly be put down if he didn’t get out of the shelter,” Kim said.

Worried about what would happen to her late patient’s beloved dog, Kim did something extraordinary: she adopted the dog herself!

According to the DAISY Foundation, Kim went to the shelter and adopted Jax, “ensuring that he would have the best life with her.”

The patient reportedly knew Jax was in good hands before she died, and was able to “pass peacefully.”

For Kim, it was a way to help a patient in a way that went beyond healthcare, and it shows the real human connection formed between nurses and their patients.

“I could have never guessed the connection that you develop with some people when you take care of them,” Kim told WSB-TV. “They just totally changed my life.”

And on top of that, she couldn’t resist giving Jax a home. She says the little dog already loves her.

“I am never going to get rid of him. He is so sweet. He is one of the most loving dogs ever.”

Kim’s above-and-beyond kindness earned her recognition from her fellow nurses. She received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

Thank you to nurse Kim Still for adopting sweet Jax! We’re so glad this precious dog has a home after his owner died. We know his owner passed away peacefully knowing her baby was in good hands.

On July 16, Augusta Police Officer Sara Rogers was called to retrieve an abandoned injured puppy.

She brought the pup to a local vet while officers tried to find her owner, but to no avail.

Officer Rogers continued to check on the puppy throughout the night during her shift, to make sure she was okay until the Kennebec Humane Society staff arrived.

Officer Rogers even took a meal break with the pup, and the two of them had already begun forming a very special bond.

Rogers knew she had to do more to help this beautiful little pup. She decided to foster her until she was available for adoption since they never located an owner.

But when it was time for the pup to find a forever home, Rogers just couldn’t give her up.

Without hesitation, Rogers decided to permanently adopt the pup, who she has since named Rey after the Star Wars Jedi.

The August Police Department shared the heartwarming story on their Facebook page, with a picture of the adorable duo.

“You have to love happy endings!” they wrote. And this is certainly one for the books!

Firefighter Mike Thawley has been saving lives in more ways than one. He has a soft spot for dogs in need, so when the Sacramento Fire Department rescued a Pit Bull puppy near a debris fire, Thawley knew there was more he could do to help them. Five years ago, he fostered and adopted a Pit Bull that was saved by Sacramento firefighters. So, he decided to do it again!

The tiny puppy is now living his best life with Thawley’s family, but his journey to get there wasn’t easy. Thawley hopes this pup’s story will help end harmful Pit Bull stereotypes.

Puppy Saved From Fire

The innocent puppy, now named Loki, was found near a debris fire. Despite being close to the flames, the pup didn’t have any injuries after. So, the firefighters sent him to the Front Street Animal Shelter to help him get adopted.

Loki’s story touched Thawley, so he chose to foster him through the shelter until the dog found his forever home. The firefighter had done something similar in the past. Five years ago, he fostered his Pit Bull named Chunk, who was chained to a fence and had mange when she was rescued. So, he wanted to provide comfort for Loki just like he had for Chunk.

However, it didn’t take long for Thawley to fall in love with Loki. After a few weeks of fostering, he decided to adopt the puppy and welcome him into the family.

“He will be adopted, and he will have a big sister named Chunk because Loki will be living with us,” Thawley said.

A Forever Home!

Thawley named the pup “Loki” after the God of fire. The Sacramento Fire Department posted a video of Thawley talking about how Loki stole his heart. In the video, Loki seems to adore his new big sister. But he has a lot of energy to keep his family on their toes!

While the family loves all dogs, Thawley adores Pit Bulls most. Since they’re often unfairly judged, he advocates for them and shows the world how wonderful they can be. They deserve love just as much as any other dog.

“He’s a tri-color pit bull mix, a breed that is misunderstood, but definitely one of the most family-friendly and loving breeds out there,” Thawley said.

The Sacramento firefighters did an amazing job saving Loki and Chunk. And Thawley saved them again by opening up his home to them. Sometimes, all a dog needs is a little love and support to thrive!

The first thing you will notice about Stroodle is that she is huge. She lives up to the size expectations of her St. Bernard breed, tipping the scales around 140 pounds. All who meet her see that her physical stature matches perfectly with the size of her heart. Gentle, loving, and sweet, Stroodle is a big ol’ teddy bear. This tender soul has suffered some terrible truths recently that remind us to never take forever for granted.

Stroodle Lost Her Human

Stroodle lived in loving companionship with an older gentleman for all of her life. Neighbors reported that the man was quiet and kept to himself but everyone around knew that he loved his dog. When he passed away unexpectedly late this summer, neighbors assumed that someone would come right away to retrieve Stroodle and take over her care. They were wrong.

When days passed and nobody came from Stroodle the neighbors came together to collectively care for her. They fed her and let her out and made she had water to drink. Eventually someone did show up, but they didn’t take Stroodle.

Movers Came to Pack the House and Leave Stroodle Behind

One day a moving van showed up. Workers busied themselves packing up the entire contents of the house. They carried furniture and boxed up belongings. The filled the truck while emptying the house. Imagine how confusing this must have been for Stroodle. Her human was gone. All of her human’s possessions were being carted out of the house. Surely someone would soon be taking her, too.

After the house was empty the workers drove away. They left Stroodle standing in the street. Alone. Understanding that Stroodle had been abandoned, neighbors safely delivered her to the Placer SPCA.

Diagnosed with Terminal Cancer

While living at the SPCA, someone found that Stroodle had a large lump. That lump turned out to be cancerous. Stroodle showed no signs of discomfort but the tumor is malignant and will ultimately lead to Stroodle’s demise. This wonderful bundle of love and comfort went from being a beloved companion to a homeless and terminally ill orphan. And it broke everyone’s heart.

The Placer SPCA Makes a Plea on Television

The Placer SPCA arranged for media coverage of Stroodle’s situation. The director spoke of how sweet tempered Stroodle was and how everyone at the shelter has fallen in love with her. They still recognized that they were making a pretty large request in asking someone to take on this big girl who only has months to live.

Stroodle Comes Home for the Holidays

Of the many people that saw Stroodle’s story, the Cotton family were the ones who couldn’t walk away. After a frank discussion with the young children about Stroodle’s health and life expectancy, the family agreed to go meet her.

On Thanksgiving Day, the Cotton family went to meet Stroodle and knew they couldn’t say no. Everyone fell in love and knew they had to take her home to live out the rest of her life in their loving care. The very next day, that is just what they did.

This holiday season we are so grateful to the Cotton family for opening their hearts and home to Stroodle. She will bring such joy and love to the entire family each and every of her remaining days.

As you can imagine, the moment the owners see their new dogs for the first time is beautiful and emotional. Everyone gathers around the trailer as the door swings open, and the tears begin to flow. Welcome to your new lives, pups! 🙂

Since starting their company in 2011, Tracy and Scott have adopted out over 3,700 dogs! If it weren’t for them, most of these dogs would not have survived. They have a wonderful thing going here, and Tracy’s Dogs deserves all the recognition they can get!

The Lawrence Police Department in Indiana was alerted to a situation where a dog was abandoned and left tied to a fence in a neighborhood. The Husky had little room to move on such a short leash, and it was obvious someone was trying to get rid of the dog for good and leave him to fend for himself.

The cops had no way to tell at first if the dog would respond aggressively or not, so they approached with caution. But the Husky was the friendliest and sweetest boy! The one officer really hit it off with the dog, and he started taking pictures to send to his wife to ask if they could keep him. 🙂

He would have to wait the four-day grace period to see if anyone stepped forward as the dog’s owner, but it was revealed on a later episode of Live PD that the cop ended up being able to adopt the Husky. Awesome! 😀

At actress Kaley Cuoco’s home, there’s always room for more rescue dogs! She and her husband Karl Cook have more pets than they’d care to admit, but this past year hasn’t been easy. They recently said goodbye to Norman, their long-term companion, and Petunia, their recently adopted senior dog.

For most families, that would deter them from adopting more, but the animal lovers only waited about six months before bringing in a new family member. Their newest addition is a 9-year-old Mastiff who’s full of love!

Meet Larry!

Cuoco spent 14 beautiful years with her Pit Bull named Norman. Her production company is even named “Yes, Norman Productions” after him. Losing Norman left one of the biggest holes in her heart, and she knew the only way to fill it was to help another dog in need.

Recently, Cuoco turned to Instagram to introduce her newest family member. She and Cook decided to open their hearts to a giant senior dog named Larry.

“When you know you know! Welcome to the family, Larry!” Cuoco wrote on Instagram. “He’s a 9 year old ginormous mastiff chunk mutt of love and we are obsessed.”

In her post, Cuoco made sure to thank Paws for Life K9 Rescue, shelter photographer Rita Earl, and Larry’s loving foster family. Cuoco also shared a series of photos with the new lovable canine.

Always Room for More

Cuoco’s home currently has a goat, a bunny, about 20 horses, several dogs, and more. Yet, she can never say no to more animals in need. Despite being a massive dog, Larry has plenty of space to adjust and feel comfortable in his new home.

In Cuoco’s photos, it looks like Larry already feels at home with his forever family. He loves to cuddle and give kisses. Cuoco even jokes that he’s as big as a horse. Although she shared a photo of him meeting one of her horses, and he’s tiny in comparison. Cuoco also shared a photo of Larry going for a walk with a few of her other dogs.

Senior dogs are often the most overlooked at shelters and rescues, but they can make the best companions. Cuoco has adopted several dogs in their senior years, and she’s a huge advocate for rescue dogs in general. If you’re looking to bring a new furry family member home, consider meeting the older ones first. They have the most love to give.
