Heartbreaking stories of animal abuse are all too common, but thankfully, there are also people who step up to give these pets the loving homes they deserve. Such is the case of a dog found abandoned in a sealed wooden box, who was recently adopted by his rescuer.

In December, Feleciana Ramirez learned about a dog who had been intentionally abandoned in a wooden dog house near the Oklahoma River in Oklahoma City. When Feleciana arrived at the scene, she used a utility ax to free the dog from the boarded-up structure.

“I was surprised to find anything alive because he wasn’t whimpering. He wasn’t making any kind of noise,” Feleciana said.

The dog was taken to OKC Animal Welfare and then to the Mutts Misfits Animal Rescue Society, where he was placed in foster care with Kayla Wise. Kayla named the dog Karus and reported that he was “very scared” and “exhausted” when he arrived at her home.

Karus had suffered physically and emotionally, likely for a long time before being abandoned in the wooden box. He was emaciated, covered in scars and wounds, and had scratch marks on the entrance from where he tried to escape.

Despite all he had endured, Karus remained gentle and sweet. Over time, he began to regain weight, and his personality started to shine.

As Karus recovered, Kayla searched for a forever home for him and found the perfect match: Karus has now been adopted by Feleciana Ramirez and her family.

This is a heartwarming ending to a sad story, as Karus has found a loving home with the woman who saved his life. After all he’s been through, he deserves nothing less.
