A 19-year-old dog named Ace was surrendered to the Sonoma shelter near the end of his life. And it was around that time that the California wildfires broke out. So he ended up at the SPCA over 150 miles away with little hope. But foster mom Bonnie noticed how full of life he acted and knew she had to at least get him out of the shelter.

So she offered to take the senior dog into her home until a forever home could be found. And over the first few days, Ace would become more and more comfortable and start to break out of his shell. He then bonded with the other foster dogs in the house!

Later on, the adoption applications started rolling in for Ace. Bonnie was feeling a bit sad knowing how much she’d miss him when he’s gone. But because of this, Ace “failed” as a foster pet! Bonnie decided to adopt him for good, and he couldn’t have ended up in a better situation for the rest of his days. 🙂

Like most dogs, 12-year-old Jaxon has a favorite toy. His name is “Greenie” and he is a jolly dragon the color of fresh limes.

Last month, Jaxon’s concerned mom, Kelli Brown took to Twitter in search of a replacement “Greenie” when she discovered that the beloved toy had been discontinued by its manufacturer.

Brown was hoping to find just one remaining “Greenie” lingering in a discount bin at a PetSmart location somewhere. She never expected her post to garner such a huge response!

Hundreds of Twitter users offered their support by resharing Brown’s plea and recommending possible replacement toys the picky senior might like.

Unfortunately, Jaxon’s heart belongs to “Greenie” and only “Greenie.” According to Brown, no substitute will do.

“We’ve tried other green toys over the years, he won’t have anything to do with them,” she tweeted. “And – there was a red & yellow version of his fave toy (a dragon!) – same size, same fabric, just a different color and no dice. What a weirdo, lol.”

Then “The Dogfather” himself caught wind of Jaxon’s plight. Matt Nelson, a pup-loving writer for We Rate Dogs, shared Brown’s post with his 55,000 followers.

A PetSmart employee saw it and reshared it in a company Facebook group. Soon, employees across the country were checking their stock for one very special lime green dragon.

Earlier this week, Jaxon received the greatest care package he could ever hope for – a box containing not one, but eight “Greenies” along with a bag of treats and a handwritten card.

Brown reached out to Nelson to share her gratitude, attaching this heartwarming video.

It just goes to show, social media can be used for good! Just ask Jax and his lifetime supply of “Greenies”!

18-year-old Muneca was surrendered to an animal shelter. The elderly blind dog was alone, confused, and petrified.

That’s when shelter volunteer Elaine Seamans went to see the senior Dachshund at the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center in Los Angeles.

As soon as Seamans got down and showed her attention, Muneca leaped into her arms and clung to her, as if she was saying, “Don’t ever let me go.” Muneca was scared, and Seamans helped her feel safe.

Luckily, this heartwarming moment was caught on camera by John Hwang, a photographer who was nearby. He posted the photos on social media, which quickly went viral.

It didn’t take long before people all over the world were voicing their concern for and interest in Muneca, including Frosted Faces Foundation, a rescue in Ramona, California, that provides vet care to senior animals whose lives are in jeopardy.

As soon as they saw the picture online, they knew they had to get Muneca out of the shelter as soon as possible. They brought her to a veterinarian to be examined before placing her with a loving foster.

Thankfully, aside from having poor vision, she was in pretty good shape for her age.

Since Muneca was now well-known all over the Internet, the rescue was flooded with applications from people who wanted to help this poor pup and give her a forever home.

Muneca was once unwanted, but now she was desired by so many people nationwide!

Out of all the applications, they chose the person who they thought would be the best fit for her. This person wound up being Amy Gann, who drove to San Diego to meet Muneca. The two of them bonded instantly, and the rescue knew they were a perfect match.

In her new home, Muneca enjoys warm bubble baths, fun trips to the beach, and is spoiled with lots of treats and a warm bed.

Muneca is so loved and never has to feel scared or alone ever again!

Our dogs start to slow down a little as they get older, but we do everything make sure they are happy and comfortable in their twilight years.

But one family went above-and-beyond for their old dog, rearranging their sleep schedules just to make sure he felt loved.

Spike is a 14-year-old English springer spaniel. Like many dogs his age, he can’t get around like he used to. He recently suffered a second stroke, which made it hard for him to get up and down the stairs.

Unfortunately, this meant Spike couldn’t do one of his favorite activities: sleeping in bed with his family, something he’s done since he was a pup.

“The first night we had him, we closed the stair gate and went to bed,” Spike’s owner Catherine Morris told The Dodo. “He whined for a couple of minutes before jumping over the gate in the dark and trotting up into my parents’ room and straight up onto the bed! And that’s where he slept from then on.”

Their bedroom was on the second floor, so Spike could no longer reach his favorite spot. He kept trying anyway in his weakened state, to the point where his family had to block off the stairs to keep him from trying.

But instead, they came up with an adorable solution: if Spike couldn’t come up and sleep with them, they would come downstairs and sleep with Spike!

Now, on a rotating basis, the family members set up the pull-out couch and spend the night downstairs with Spike, all to make sure the old dog still has company.

Catherine returned from university to find her parents’ new sleeping arrangement, but it didn’t surprise her — they’ve always had a close bond with Spike.

“They’re absolutely inseparable,” Catherine told The Dodo. “My dad calls him ‘old bean’ and they’re always chatting away.”

“My dad will also bring Spike his water and food to the sofa and feed him by hand to make sure he gets his medicines and keeps his strength up.”

Spike might not be the young pup he used to be, but it’s clear one thing has never changed: his family’s love for him.

With this selfless act, they are making it clear they will do whatever it takes to make Spike’s final years as great as possible.

“We love our old boy so much and are so glad to have him in our lives,” Catherine said. “Hopefully, we have made up for his not so good start in life by providing all the love in the world.”

It’s amazing the lengths people will go to make their dogs happy. Thank you to this family for looking after their old dog.

It’s always difficult when a dog goes missing, but it’s even worse when they’re an older dog with health issues. A healthier dog might be able to survive on their own for weeks or months, but when a dog wanders off from their families and their medication, things get serious.

With no time to waste, one community rallied to help find a lost golden retriever, and successfully rescued the dog before it was too late.

Jane Albrecht, from Lopez Island, Washington, is the owner of a 14-year-old golden retriever named Sage.

But last week, Sage suddenly went missing. It was a scary situation because the senior dog suffers from an enlarged heart and arthritis, according to KOMO News. Jane worried her dog may have “walked off to die.”

But no one was willing to give up on this old dog: soon, Jane’s neighbors were rallying to help, offering to search all over the neighborhood.

“People showed up who I had never met as well as people who know and love Jane and her dogs, the search party was amazing,” Sarah Vallejo, one of the members of the search party, wrote on Facebook.

The neighbors looked everywhere, even employing drones to search overhead, but still no luck. Stephanie says she began losing hope… when suddenly, she received a call saying Sage had been found.

The problem was, he was trapped. A man named Jim “Eagle Eye” Parker spotted the dog in the bay, on a rock surrounded by rising water.

Jim supplied a kayak, which Stephanie was able to use to reach the scared dog and bring him to safety.

Sage is now home, after being missing for five days. While the old dog has some bruises, he’s otherwise unharmed and doing great.

And it’s all thanks to the kindness of a group of neighbors who didn’t give up.

According to KOMO, a grateful Jane wrote a Facebook post thanking her neighbors: “Thank you to my wonderful Lopez and online community for love and support.”

“I am so relieved that he was found, we all are. My gratitude and heart are full, overflowing with all the kindness shown to the rescuers,” Stephanie wrote on Facebook. “It took every single person. Every search, every drive, every hike, I really believe they all count.”

With the Fourth of July this past weekend, many Americans celebrated Independence Day with fireworks displays.

But while most people enjoy the explosive sights and sounds of fireworks, our dogs certainly do not: they have highly sensitive hearing and the loud sounds can cause them great fear and anxiety.

It’s a dark side to the festive celebrations… and sadly, sometimes the results can be fatal. That was the case for one old dog, who died after suffering a panic attack during a fireworks display.

The heartbreaking story was shared by Antonella Modasjazh on Facebook. She said her old dog Magui died after a series of panic attacks triggered by fireworks.

“She was old and was terrified of fireworks,” Antonella wrote, according to the Daily Star. “We did not know where to put her while other people were having fun, she was going through a very bad moment.”

She says the family called local veterinarians but no one responded. The old dog passed away as Antonella’s son held her in his arms.

For this grieving family, no holiday celebration was worth the life of their dog.

“Your fun terrified her, it generated an inexplicable panic,” Antonella wrote.

It’s a tragic reminder of the real effect fireworks can have on dogs. While the situation isn’t always as fatal as this one, so many dogs are similarly panicked by the noise.

If you set off fireworks this summer, remember to be courteous to your neighbors with pets—let them know when you’ll be setting them off so they can prepare their pets for a potential panic attack.

There are thousands of animals waiting in shelters at any moment, and thankfully there are people who rescue them and give them a home.

But some animals have to wait longer than others. For whatever reason, some animals just have a harder time finding a forever family and spend years in a shelter. Many old dogs are left wondering if they’ll ever get out.

But sometimes all you need is that one final push to really stand out from the crowd and make your story heard. That’s what one lonely dog did—and got amazing results.

A pit bull named Dahlia arrived at Santa Barbara Humane Society in October 2008, when she was just six months old. Shelter workers found her to be a wonderful dog, once you took the time to know her.

“She is a little timid when meeting new people but once she gets to know you she is such a sweetheart,” Erica Jackson, canine adoption counselor at SBHS, told The Dodo.

But apparently, people didn’t see how good a dog she was—year after year, she was passed over for adoption.

It isn’t clear why—maybe because she was shy, maybe because of the problems pit bulls always have finding families. Either way, Dahlia ended up waiting in the shelter for nearly seven years.

It broke everyone’s heart to see her waiting so long. She waited at SBHS longer than any other dog. But he shelter resolved to finally find her a home.

“Dahlia has been here a long time and is yearning to get out!” the shelter wrote on Facebook. “To play with you, to run with other dogs, to burn energy with the kids, and to teach you how to give the perfect belly rub.”

“She may look a little scary – which comes in handy sometimes — but that is wrong! She is such a love bucket!”

But it was one heartbreaking photo—one that emphasized just how long she had been waiting for a family—that really got people’s attention:

“I have been here 2,531 days and counting,” the poor dog’s sign read. “Can you help me?”

It proved to be an effective plea—the photo was shared over 2,000 times on Facebook, and adoption requests started pouring in.

Soon they found a perfect match, and Dahlia finally had her forever home.

It was the happy ending this lonely dog deserved.

“We are over the moon!” the shelter wrote. “Thank you to everyone that shared her story and reached out to us!”

We’re so happy for Dahlia! Her long wait is finally over.

Dogs deserve to age gracefully. Sadly there are many senior dogs with significant health problems languishing in shelters. Potential adopters tend to go for puppies and younger dogs while seniors are overlooked. It’s heartbreaking to see a senior dog suffering while alone in a city shelter.

For one senior dog, he had given up completely. He had watched as potential adopters passed him by for years. He resided to the fact that he’d spend the remainder of his days in a loud, overcrowded shelter without a home to call his own. But one day, fate intervened. A woman, named Emma from Oregon got a call about the senior, and arrangments were made to free him from the shelter.

Emma gives the deserving senior dog a name, Earl. Once Earl arrives in Oregon and meets his foster mom, she can see he’s worse off than she thought. She tries to get him to eat but he has no appetite. This is so concerning! Especially when Emma has to resort to syringe feeding. But thankfully, Earl gets stronger and is able to eat a bit while lying down.

But next, Earl’s breathing becomes labored and his stomach begins to bloat. He needs to be rushed to the vet, immediately! That’s when Emma receives the worst news imaginable: Earl is in heart failure and it was time to prepare to say goodbye. The next 24 hours were crucial but it didn’t look good. The vet explained that if Earl survived the night, there was hope! And guess what… he did!

The next morning, Emma comes down to see Earl and he’s wagging his tail like crazy. She’s elated! It was like a switch went off. Within a few hours, Earl was up and about, giving paw and ready to play. This was miraculous.

The vet still said that Earl likely had about a month to live but it’s been 7 months and Earl is still going strong. The thing that matters most is that Earl will leave this earth knowing he’s loved. There are so many senior animals in need of homes right now. They are too often passed over and we need to advocate for them. It’s amazing how emotionally intelligent and caring dogs can be, especially around children. Some parents worry how their dogs and babies will interact, but in most cases dogs prove to be both loyal protectors and gentle playmates to their young humans.

That’s never been truer than one remarkable story, where an elderly dog defied his limitations to heroically save a toddler’s life

In April 2018, a 3-year-old named Aurora went missing in the bushland of Queensland, Australia. The vast and difficult terrain made the search nearly impossible.

“The area around the house is quite mountainous and is very inhospitable terrain to go walking in,” State Emergency Service area controller Ian Phipps told ABC. “The search was actually quite hard where the volunteers and the police were, amongst the very steep slopes full of lantana and other vegetation.”

Hours passed. The afternoon turned to night, and the situation seemed dire. It was cold and rainy, and Aurora wasn’t dressed for the weather.

But luckily, Aurora wasn’t alone after all: she was with her dog, Max—a 17-year-old deaf and partially blind blue heeler.

Max stayed with Aurora all night, keeping her safe and warm as she slept by his side.

Not only that, Max saved the day by alerting the family to their location.

Aurora’s grandmother Leisa Bennett heard her granddaughter’s cry from the mountain and headed toward her. On the way, she found Max, who led her to the exact location, saving her from searching through the terrain.

“When I heard her yell ‘Grammy’ I knew it was her,” Leisa said. “I shot up the mountain … and when I got to the top, the dog came to me and led me straight to her.”

Amazingly, they found her just in time before she suffered any negative health effects from the exposure.

“She’s a very hardy young lass to survive that without any ill effects and everyone, all the volunteers are extremely happy,” Ian Phipps told ABC.

It makes you wonder how things might’ve been different if Max had not been there, both to protect her overnight and reveal her location.

“It could have gone any of 100 ways, but she’s here, she’s alive, she’s well and it’s a great outcome for our family,” Leisa said.

Despite not being able to hear or see very well, Max stepped up to save the day and was rightly hailed as a hero. The Queensland Police even dubbed him an honorary police dog.

It’s a reminder that dogs are capable of incredible things, even the ones who are old and impaired. Thank you, Max, for saving the day!

At the ripe old age of 18, Figgy the Toy Poodle found himself blind, toothless… and abandoned. Who could do such a thing?

The elderly pup was surrendered to a vet clinic where he could have met his ultimate fate. But by a stroke of good luck, the confused, scared senior made his way into the loving care of the Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco, California.

When he arrived with his paperwork, staff and volunteers were shocked to see the reason for his surrender: his owner’s wife “didn’t like him” because “he’s stupid.” Unbelievable!

What’s more, according to the paperwork, it doesn’t look like they had the poor pooch for very long. It’s possible that he’d lived in a few different homes already.

But thanks to the Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, Figgy was finally surrounded by people who truly appreciated him. And it wasn’t long before the senior sweetheart got the best news of all: he was going to move into a forever home!
