About a month ago, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) responded to a call about a dog trapped in a hot car. At the time, they suspected that the dog had been stranded in the vehicle for over two hours. After further research, the ASPCA announced that they believe the dog was actually in the car for 24 hours.

The outside temperature was in the mid-80s that day, which can reach over 100 degrees in a parked vehicle in just ten minutes. The dog would’ve perished if people hadn’t expressed concern for him. His recovery was long, but now, he has found his happily ever after.

Fighting for His Life

Several caring New Yorkers called the police when they spotted a fluffy white dog in a hot car. The car was off, and the windows were closed with the dog trapped inside, wearing a leash.

Members of the NYPD 19th Precinct gathered around the car and recorded the rescue as it was happening. One officer broke the glass on the passenger window and reached in to unlock the car. The car alarm went off for a few seconds but then stopped as the officer opened one of the back doors to get to the dog.

“Yesterday’s afternoon temps hovered in the mid 80’s & on an 85° day, it only takes 10 mins for the inside of a car to reach a deadly 102°! It’s prohibited to leave an animal unattended in a car under these dangerous conditions—thankfully the pup was rescued & is being cared for,” the NYPD 19th Precinct wrote on Twitter.

The officers brought the dog to the ASPCA Animal Recovery Center in Manhattan. He spent a month there receiving medical and behavioral treatment. Then, he was ready for adoption.

Officer Adopts Dog

The dog, who is an American Eskimo Dog now known as Snow, found his perfect family right away. Officer Aruna Maharaj with the NYPD fell in love with Snow during the rescue, so she kept in touch with the ASPCA during his recovery.

“From the moment Officer Maharaj was involved in this case, she knew Snow was special,” the ASPCA said. “She immediately brought him into her car with the air conditioner blasting, where he sat on her lap, licked her face, and wouldn’t move from her company.”

Officer Maharaj officially adopted Snow once he went through all his necessary care. Snow has adjusted well to his new family and even gets along with his new cat sibling. He loves having a large yard to run around in, and he walks to the park with his family regularly. He’s living the dream!

The NYPD hasn’t mentioned anything about Snow’s previous owner, but hopefully, they’ve been punished for leaving Snow to die in that hot car. No dog deserves to go through that.

Sometimes pets come into our lives in the most unexpected ways at the most unexpected times. That was the case for one couple, who found a dog while on vacation — and the pup was eager to make them his new family.

According to SWNS, Martina Russo, from Milan, Italy, and her partner Fil was driving through the Spanish countryside when they noticed a local was following them.

It was a tiny puppy, who seemed very eager to catch up with them: “We thought it was just a game,” Martina told SWNS, “but soon realized something wasn’t right because she was running fast and would not stop.”

Sensing that the dog was in real need of help, they stopped the car to give her some water — and the pup soon became attached.

“We… took her to the nearest village to ask if someone had lost her, but no one had ever seen her before,” they wrote on Instagram. “We are in the middle of nowhere, no houses or other human life in a long-range.”

“On the way back we put her back where we found her, thinking she might know to walk back, but she followed us again until we got to the van.”

The dog just kept following their car, and the couple realized that the dog might have been abandoned in the countryside.

“We took her to the vet the next day, and turns out she was not chipped, not spayed, female, about one-year-old, fur very overgrown and full of gunk around the eyes,” Martina told SWNS.

They continued to search for the puppy’s owner, but after looking around the area and posting on social media, no one came forward.

After a few weeks, they concluded that the dog had no family — and decided to adopt the dog themselves!

The dog, now named Moxie, is now a beloved part of Martina and Fil’s family.

“She’s very sweet and funny, very playful, loves our cats — to be fair, she loves everything and everyone!” Martina said. “We love taking her on adventures, and she makes us laugh every day.”

“Every day is a new adventure for Moxie now.”

How amazing. Moxie definitely picked the right car to chase down — as if she knew they would be the perfect ones to give her a new home. It goes to show that everything happens for a reason.

Officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department are being hailed as heroes after rescuing a mother dog and her puppy from the back seat of a hot car earlier this month.

Although the car was parked in an enclosed parking garage, the temperature outside was nearly 96 degrees. A kind guard noticed the dogs in distress and called the police right away.

The car was parked in a lot for the Wild Wild West Gambling Hall — and the dogs’ owner was presumably inside gambling.

When officers arrived, they saw the two dogs inside the car struggling for breath and panting. A sunroof and the rear windows were left slightly open, but there was no circulation in the dry, stale air.

Since the dogs were in the back seat, one of the quick-thinking officers decided to smash in the front passenger side window in order to safely retrieve them. Body camera footage shows the tired and panting dogs in another officer’s arms.

One of the dogs couldn’t stop wagging her tail when she realized she’d finally been saved. After the daring rescue, the dogs were ushered by patrol car to a local veterinary office where they received care. Luckily, both dogs were unharmed in the incident.

“Recently, our officers have been forced to break vehicle windows to save dogs in distress,” the department posted on Facebook. “The Las Vegas heat is lethal and the weather is too hot to leave animals and pets in cars. In two unrelated cases, we saved the lives of three poor puppers and arrested one owner.”

In Nevada, it is a misdemeanor to leave an animal unattended inside a car “if conditions, including, without limitation, extreme heat or cold, present a significant risk to the health and safety of the pet.”

Across the country, 31 states have similar laws, which vary in who can rescue the animals. Fifteen states let anyone rescue an animal in distress, while in Nevada, only public safety officers and animal control officers can do it on private property.

While it’s not clear whether the owner of the dogs was arrested, many on social media called for the dogs to be taken away.

“Oh my goodness — thank you so much Metro,” one concerned person wrote. “You were the chosen angels that day to rescue those babies. Please, please don’t let them go back to that horrible person.”

Nothing inspires quite like the resilience of a dog. They can overcome abuse and still love people, thrive through disability, and most of all, they never complain.

Two whole months after a Pit-mix was hit by a car, injuring his back, he was surrendered to a shelter. The pup had never been treated for his injuries in all that time, and he essentially had no use of his back legs by the time he was surrendered.

Seeing the extent of this dog’s condition, the shelter asked local rescue group One By One Animal Advocates for help. Devastated to see what the poor pup had gone through already, One By One shared his story on Facebook:

“For two months he has been unable to walk, or use his back legs. For two months he has suffered in silence. But today, THAT WILL CHANGE.”

The Consequences Of Delayed Treatment

One By One Animal Advocates named the brave boy Shohei and brought him to Proctorville Animal Clinic for a complete neuromuscular exam, X-Rays, and basic vetting.

Vets determined that Shohei had a compressed disc in his back. His condition likely deteriorated the longer he went without seeing a vet.

Frustrated, rescuers are confident that this extreme injury could have been prevented with immediate treatment after his accident. One By One Animal Advocates explained:

“The trauma of being hit by a car completely shoved two discs together, shoving the protective gelatinous material into his spinal cord. Had he been provided treatment with inexpensive prednisone at that time, he may have recovered. We can’t know that for certain, but it was a cheap, reasonable therapy that had the potential of great outcome.”

Refusing To Stay Down

Even after everything, Shohei loves every person he meets. He would never let two non-working back legs prevent him from running over for a greeting. The strong pup learned to move by scooting himself with his front two legs.

One By One Animal Advocates expressed so much pride in Shohei’s strength:

“Dogs are so resilient that he has learned how to get around despite his injury, and right now he can’t seem to believe the wonderful turn his life has taken. He’s hopping and happy and making friends.”

Shohei also has a custom wheelchair now, paid for through One By One’s fundraising. They made sure he got a personalized cart, not just a standard one you could find on Amazon. These carts can be pricey, but you’d be hard-pressed to think of a dog more deserving of one.

With his custom-made cart, Shohei can run around with the best of them. The rescue affectionately referred to him as “a greyhound on wheels.” Just look at him go over curbs and everything:

Heather A., President of One By One Animal Advocates, told Waggle how helping Shohei realize his full potential again affected his rescuers:

“To be given an opportunity to see Shohei be a dog again just makes me cry. He is one of those dogs that proves how resilient animals are, how they make the best of their situation.”

A Foster Family That Understands

While still hoping to find a forever home, Shohei was placed with the perfect foster. His foster mom helps him with his disability, but he’s thrilled just to have foster siblings and a yard to run around in.

“His foster is retired, so he has someone able to give him all the time he needs; she also has a special needs dog of her own, and is equipped with a doggy ramp for Shohei to use.”

As of the publication of this post, Shohei is still available for adoption on Adopt A Pit’s page. The organization, which stepped in to help One By One find a home for this guy, shared:

“He is the biggest love bug you will ever meet & he will pay you back 10 fold for the love you show him!!!”

Shohei is obviously a sweet and overwhelmingly optimistic dog who would make a great addition to your family!

A scary incident could have been much worse if it weren’t for the quick thinking of a very vigilant Border Collie.

While a woman was backing up her car in the snow, a tiny Chihuahua was making his way across the driveway at the same time.

Unfortunately, the woman didn’t see the Chihuahua, since he was so small compared to the car, and also blended in with the dirty snow.

Thankfully, someone WAS watching. Moments before the car would have hit the Chihuahua, a Border Collie swooped in and picked up the pup in his mouth. He sprinted forward, getting out of the way of the car and saving the little pup just in the nick of time.

As soon as the woman saw something in her mirror, she stopped her car and got out. Initially, she thought she crushed her dog, but was relieved to find out that both dogs were ok.

I’m sure she was stunned and amazed once she watched what was captured on the surveillance cameras!

Stefanie and Duane Lindsay spent a fun-filled day at the beach with their three-year-old dog, Roo. But the day took a turn for the worst after they ended up in a bad car accident on their way home.

While the couple was driving back to their El Dorado County, California home from Bodega Bay, another driver crashed into them while going 65 mph on the highway.

The couple’s car flipped and landed upright in a nearby grassy field, but thankfully they only suffered minor injuries. They immediately checked on each other before realizing that Roo was no long in the back seat.

They saw that the back window had been blown out, and began to think the worst. After forcefully being thrown out of the window, Stefanie was sure Roo was dead.

Despite bleeding from his head, Duane began crawling around on the floor to look for Roo while Stefanie called 911. While she waited for an ambulance to arrive, she searched the road and nearby grass for Roo, but to no avail.

Once emergency personnel arrived, Duane was transported to the hospital, while firefighters and highway patrol used thermal sensors to scan the area for Roo.

Duane was diagnosed with a fractured sternum, but since Stefanie was unable to be with her husband due to Covid-19, she returned to the area to search for her beloved pup.

Although she still couldn’t find her, she refused to give up. She turned to social media and posted about Roo, trying to garner the attention of as many rescue groups in the area as possible.

At this point, even strangers in the community joined in on the search for Roo.

14 hours after Roo had gone missing, the couple saw a tip that someone posted on Facebook. It led them to a neighborhood three miles away from the accident, where Roo was contently sitting under a tree.

“I lost it,” Stefanie told CNN. “I fell to my knees in the middle of the cul-de-sac, waiting for her. It took her a couple of seconds to register who I was, but once she did, she just comes running to me.”

Thankfully, aside from road rash and soft tissue damage, Roo was going to be okay.

Stefanie hopes their story will encourage people to buy their pets a safety harness seatbelt.

When someone doesn’t hesitate to save a dog, they quickly become a hero on social media. Deputy Michael Gregorek is the perfect example because he found out a dog was in danger, so he dropped everything to save him.

A man’s car had started on fire with his dog named Hank still inside. When Gregorek heard he was responding to a car fire, he had no idea what to expect. But when he found out Hank was trapped in the smokey car, he jumped into action. Gregorek is a proud dog parent, so he knew saving the dog’s life was a priority.

Trapped in a Burning Car

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado responded to a car fire in a neighborhood. Deputies had many questions as they arrived at the scene, such as where the car was parked and how the fire started.

They saw that the car was parked on the street with smoke filling up inside. A man was throwing something at the back window, which made deputies wonder if he was responsible for the fire. But when Gregorek approached the vehicle, the man revealed that he owned the car, but his dog was trapped inside.

Since the car seemed to be locked, Gregorek broke some of the windows as he looked for the dog. After the back window broke, Hank peeked out of the car, so his human ran to him. The man tried to pull the large dog out of the car by himself, but it didn’t work.

“Hank comes to the back window, he’s salivating, you can tell that he’s in distress,” Gregorek said. “[The] owner was trying to pull him out, not successfully.”

Hero Saves the Day

When the owner backed away from the vehicle, Gregorek stepped in. He reached in and pulled the dog out of the car. The dog seemed heavy, and Gregorek breathed in smoke as he picked him up.

“My thought at that point was ‘he’s coming out with me regardless of whatever else might be happening,’” Gregorek said.

After getting Hank out of the car, Gregorek carried him toward the house and set him down in the snow. Gregorek coughed as he walked away from the dog. The entire rescue was recorded on bodycam footage, and it’s nerve-racking to watch.

Luckily, one of the neighbors was a vet who was able to check up on Hank right away. He seemed in good shape despite everything. It’s still unknown how the fire started in the car, but everyone involved is grateful that the dog is safe and doing well.

Shannon Lorio tears up every time she recalls the catastrophic day when she nearly died in a car crash. On that fated day, Shannon was driving through the winding rural roads of Georgia when a sudden curve caused her to lose control of her vehicle. Her car crashed and her body plummeted down the adjoining wilderness, 100 feet away from the main road.

Shannon suffered severe head trauma on impact and she lost her ability to move. That’s when a homeless German Shepherd who was wandering nearby noticed her plight and came running to help. He tugged at her lifeless body and sensed that time was running out for the injured woman.

For the next several minutes, Shannon slipped in and out of consciousness as she felt her body being dragged out of the wilderness by the valiant German Shepherd. The disoriented woman knew the dog was standing by her side when a motorist eventually found her lying on the side of the road!

Thanks to a very timely ER treatment, Shannon made it out alive! The moment she gained consciousness, she began looking for the dog who single-handedly saved her from sure death. After spending days looking for the dog, Shannon finally found him and proudly christened him as “Hero”!

Shannon took Hero to the local Humane Society, where dog trainer Heidy Drawdy fell in love with Hero. Heidy adopted him and is now training him to be a search and rescue dog, something that he’s already good at! Way to go, Hero!

James Booth, a U.S. Navy Veteran, and his service dog, a Shar Pei, Pit Bull and Retriever mix, are the best of friends. They formed an extremely close bond and have been inseparable for the past ten years. Ladybug helped Booth adjust to civilian life after the Navy, and has helped get him through everyday life.

Booth couldn’t imagine his life without Ladybug, so when she was stolen along with his 2008 Dodge Caliber, he was absolutely heartbroken. The car, with Ladybug inside, was stolen in the parking lot of the Catholic Charities in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota.

The St. Paul Police immediately launched an investigation and posted on social media to alert the public about the missing dog and car. In the meantime, Booth was having a very hard time without his furry best friend. He couldn’t sleep and was having nightmares that something bad had happened to her.

Thankfully, a person who saw the story about Ladybug said they saw the stolen vehicle out in the town and immediately called 911. Cops tracked down the car and found Ladybug safe, along with a 33-year-old woman. Ladybug was quickly reunited with Booth, who was thrilled and relieved to have his sidekick back. The woman who stole her and the car has since been arrested.

This story just goes to show how important word of mouth is when it comes to finding your missing pets. Putting the story out there for all to see really helps, and you should never give up searching or lose hope!
