Nearly Hairless Puppy Grows Fur Back After Being Rescued

When Terra was first rescued, she had almost no hair and she seemed very fearful. Her hair loss was the result of a skin condition which likely came about because her previous family was neglectful. The poor puppy had a lot of recovering to do, and she didn’t even know what it was like to be loved. Luckily, a kind veterinary worker from West Sussex, UK decided to help Terra through her recovery process.

Terra lost most of her fur due to a disease called mange. Mange is a horrible and painful skin disease for mammals that is caused by mites. Animals suffering from this condition are typically hairless with skin that is covered in sores.

Mange is common for dogs that are strays as well as for dogs that are either abused or neglected. To help an animal recover from mange, they need medicated shampoos and topical creams to help get rid of the bugs.

Terra’s Recovery

Jessie DeFreitas, a veterinary assistant, fell in love with Terra because of her “beautiful eyes.” At home, DeFreitas already had four cats and a rescue dog, but she knew that she could make room for Terra as well. After all, if the little puppy hadn’t been signed over to the vets, she probably wouldn’t have survived.

First, DeFreitas asked to foster the puppy. Terra needed constant care, so she was willing to provide her with a safe and loving home.

At the time, she named her Honey, but she quickly learned that name did not fit her. This is because at first, Terra was very angry and would play bite too much. She certainly didn’t seem sweet like honey at the time, so her name was changed to Terra.

Over time, as Terra healed from her mange, she also became more loving. Eventually, all her hair grew back and she ended up having a beautiful brown and white coat. She also ended up being much kinder and sweeter than before.

“She’s recovered really well. You can see it in her eyes. She’s become happier and happier,” said DeFreitas. “She’s amazing. She’s just the kindest and sweetest thing.”

DeFreitas already had lots of animals to care for, but she’s glad that she opened her heart to Terra as well. The veterinary assistant has a huge love for animals and she couldn’t just say no to a puppy in need. Even though she was initially just fostering Terra, she decided to adopt her. Thanks to DeFreitas’ kind heart, Terra is happy and healthy now despite everything she went through as a young puppy.
