An 85-year-old man known as Donal Rogers is at risk of losing his beloved furry friend. His 5-year-old Jack Russell Terrier named Kim has never shown any signs of aggression before, but a recent interaction ended with her biting a stranger.

Despite being a single offense, the victim wants Kim to be put down, leaving Rogers heartbroken. But many animal lovers are fighting to help the old man keep his dog. One person on Rogers’ side is comedian and animal activist Ricky Gervais. Gervais shared a Tweet that helped the poor man’s situation get more positive attention.

One Mistake Puts Life at Risk

Sadly, one dog bite can lead to canine euthanasia, even if the bite was justified or a one-time offense. Like many others in this situation, Rogers never thought Kim would bite someone. The little Terrier is his best friend, and he can’t imagine life without her.

Rogers, a former member of the Irish police force, had Kim outside when she unexpectedly bit a woman walking by. A Twitter user said this was the woman’s third time getting bit by a dog, and she had the first two put down. So, she immediately tried to have Kim put down too. Yet, Rogers said Kim hasn’t bitten anyone before or since the incident.

Rogers said he tried to reason with the woman four times, but she always refused. He offered to keep Kim in a fenced-in area when outside, work with a dog behaviorist or keep a muzzle on her in public. But no matter what he suggested, she refused to budge. The only way she’ll be satisfied is if Kim is euthanized. The court dates have been very stressful for Rogers.

“I have a heart condition, and I have a pacemaker fitted. I was brought in for a checkup on the pacemaker last week and they were able to figure out from the reaction of the pacemaker on the days of the court, the pacemaker reacted and went faster,” Rogers said. “I am unable to sleep, especially in the early morning.”

Save Kim!

Many people have shared this story on social media and raised money to help Rogers, but there’s not much he can do without the woman having a change of heart. One Twitter user even reached out to Gervais since he’s such a big animal advocate. He shared the post, hoping it would help.

“This is so sad and frustrating. Anyone out there know how this dog can be saved?” Gervais wrote on Twitter.

The fundraiser is now closed, but people are still spreading the word to save Rogers’ dog. Kim and Rogers have lived a peaceful life before this incident, and they just want to return to the way things were. Kim sleeps at the foot of Rogers’ bed and she has won several local dog shows. She’s a huge part of Rogers’ life, and he says he’ll miss her terribly if she’s put down.

Of course, no one is saying the dog bite is okay, but most dog lovers agree that Kim and Rogers’ lives shouldn’t be ruined because of it, especially when Rogers is willing to do whatever it takes to keep Kim alive. Hopefully, the court will listen to the pleas of Rogers’ supporters, including Ricky Gervais, so Kim can keep living beside her best friend.

There’s nothing more special than the bond between a child and their dog. Every kid should grow up with a dog — they’re not only loving companions but they’re also very protective of their owners, always willing to put themselves on the line when there’s danger.

That’s what one tiny but very brave proved this week, after she defended her 10-year-old owner from a coyote, sustaining injuries in the process.

Macy is a six-year-old Yorkie mix who lives with her owner Dorothy Kwan and her family in Scarborough, Toronto.

Recently, Macy was out for a walk with the family’s 10-year-old daughter — and things took a drastic turn when the girl came face-to-face with a wild coyote.

But amazingly, the little dog stepped up to be a hero, facing off with the coyote to protect her owner.

The footage is distressing: you can see the coyote attacking Macy in the background as the girl cries for help.

But ultimately, however, Macy is the victor in the showdown: Macy continues to bark, and eventually the coyote retreats, as if chased off by the smaller canine.

“You can see our dog putting herself between my daughter and the coyote,” Dorothy Kwan told blogTO. “Even after she was seriously injured, she continued to bark and chase the coyote away. She fought back.”

While Macy succeeded in fending off the coyote, she was still left with some severe injuries. “She received extensive injuries to her body and leg,” Dorothy wrote. “She is undergoing surgery for her wounds at the emergency animal hospital.”

Dorothy was left hearbroken, knowing her beloved little dog got hurt all to save her daughter. “My heart is breaking for both my little one and our dog whom we rescued 5 years ago. I’m a single mom of two and my children and our dog mean everything to me.”

Macy was taken to the animal hospital where she received care for her wounds, but the bill ended up costing thousands.

But when the family put up a GoFundMe page raising money for the funds, sharing Macy’s heroic story with the world, people came through: the page has nearly $20,000, doubling its fundraising goal.

And even better, Macy is now recovering nicely, according to updates from Dorothy on the fundraising page.

“Her fever is gone and she’s got her appetite back,” she wrote today. “I am so very proud of her. No coyotes will want to mess with her when she comes home. My feisty girl is a true fighter. I love you so very much. You can do this!”

What a brave little dog. We hope heroic Macy makes a fast recovery!

A big-eared pooch named Tiny reached the conclusion of his harrowing rescue story just one week after he narrowly avoided euthanasia at a Philadelphia shelter. A couple read his incredible story and were reminded of their previous dog who was also rescued just before being put to sleep. They fell in love with Tiny’s goofy face, and together the three of them have embarked on their new lives together. It’s a heartwarming happy ending that almost never happened.

Tiny found himself in the custody of the Animal Care and Control Team of Philadelphia (ACCT). As is the practice of many open admission shelters that are forced to place time limits on the pets in their care, ACCT sends out emails with photos of at-risk animals to local rescue groups.

It was through one of these emails that Candace Scheirer first laid eyes on Tiny. Scheirer is president of Noah’s Ark Rescue Project and Sanctuary (NARPS). Much like Tiny’s future adopters, she fell for him the moment she saw his blocky, red head and soulful eyes.

Knowing that Tiny was already scheduled to be euthanized in just a few days, Scheirer emailed ACCT and asked to meet the special pup. She told The Dodo:

“I got a phone call from the lifesaving staff [at ACCT], saying that Tiny is still there, but he is declining and he’s not doing well. I said, ‘OK, I’m working on trying to find an exit plan for him. I do want him — I’m working on it.’”

But somehow the lines got crossed. On the day that a volunteer for the Noah’s Ark Rescue Project arrived at ACCT to assess Tiny, she received the devastating news – he was already dead or soon would be.

When Scheirer received the shocking call from her volunteer, she immediately contacted ACCT. Tiny had been given a powerful injection of sedative to prepare him for euthanasia, but thankfully, the second, life-ending injection had yet to be given.

Scheirer explained that she still wanted Tiny, and the volunteer was able to liberate the tranquilized pooch from the shelter and transport him to a temporary foster home.

‘The rest of the day, he was pretty out of it,” Scheirer said. “He was pretty much unconscious.”

Tiny eventually awoke from the heavy sedative and found himself living in a dream. His foster home was filled with love, soft places to nap, balls to chase, and even a toddler to snuggle! Tiny absolutely flourished!

Then came Andrew and Jessica Benvenuto. Just six days after a needle entered his vein and carried him off into a deep – and almost final – sleep, Tiny was officially adopted!

The couple were still mourning for their previous dog, Spaghetti, another pooch who narrowly escaped euthanasia before adoption. Giving Tiny a loving home struck them as the perfect way to honor Spaghetti’s memory.

“He’s definitely a lover,” Andrew Benvenuto told The Dodo. “He settled right in.”

A spokesperson for the ACCT shelter in Philadelphia offered a statement expressing their sincere gratitude to Scheirer and NARPS for saving Tiny from becoming yet another statistic.

“As an open-intake organization with a high annual intake, ACCT Philly’s resources are extremely limited and Tiny needed more than we could provide him in a shelter setting. Thankfully, NARPS has the necessary resources to give him a second chance and we are very grateful they were able to save him.”

At one point, the dog in this story was cherished and loved. But then he was struck by a neighbor after getting out of his yard. The injury caused significant damage to his body and instead of his owner getting him treatment, he left him all alone in a ditch to die. His owner’s love was not unconditional in the first place.

When the dog was finally found, he was incredibly weak. He had no food or water. The rescuer gave him a big bucket of clean water that he lapped up immediately. She then picked him up carefully to take him to the vet. It was obvious that he couldn’t stand nor walk on his own.

The vet told the kind woman that it was possible for the dog to recover but it would take extensive physical therapy… and a lot of time and patience. The woman was adamant! She would devote her time and her love to this precious pup.

She brought him home and he knew he was safe. He even smiled and tried to wag his tail. His new mom scheduled a physical therapy consultation. She explained that she could only afford one session so he would have to teach her how to help the dog herself. He agreed.

The dog’s new mom worked with him every single day. Besides physical therapy, he also needed to learn to trust humans again. The only person he loved betrayed him. Now it was time for him to understand that his new mom would never leave him.

After a proper diet, lots of love, and physical therapy, the dog began to heal. In five months, he was up and walking! It was truly incredible to see. There is never an excuse to leave an animal behind. When you adopt an animal, it’s a forever commitment. Sadly this dog’s original owner didn’t understand that. The good boy came across the motionless kitty freezing out in the snow and thought to drag her all the way to his outdoor doghouse.

His instincts kicked in to get her somewhere warm, and it’s amazing to see.

After hearing the ruckus outside, the dog’s owner recorded the video and captured the heartwarming moment for everyone to see.

No other information was attached along with the video, and we hope the cat got all the proper care needed, but the dog’s heroic actions and empathy are totally worth as much recognition as possible!

It amazes me the lengths that people will go to in ensuring the animal they are supposed to be caring for is discarded as if it were a piece of trash; it’s beyond my imagination.

When a 5-year-old Boxer mix dog was dumped in the parking lot of a church she wasn’t alone, she was dumped with her nine 2-week old puppies.

Not only did this poor pooch have to fend for herself but also her nine puppies who she had not long given birth to.

The heartless person behind this cruel act has not been found but thankfully the mama dog was found by two animal heroes who helped this sweet dog get back on her paws.

The frightened dog was found in a church parking lot in Abilene, Kansas. A picture was taken of her and posted on social media appealing for the public’s help.

Mistie Boerger of Paw Angel Animal Rescue saw the post and knew what she had to do.

“I saw the picture and it just broke my heart and I called Angel and we went and rescued the dogs,” Mistie said, as per the Animal Channel.

Mistie drove to the spot where the dogs had been found and put them in the back seat of her car.

“I just don’t know how someone could do that, leaving momma and two week old babies,” Mistie said.

The mom needed medical attention and one of her puppies had to be put down after the veterinarian discovered a tumor in its throat.

After they received the medical attention they needed Mistie decided to temporarily foster them until they had fully recovered.

“They will be staying with me for two weeks and then moved to a permanent foster. They will placed for adoption after they have been spayed and neutered and mom is spayed,” she wrote on Facebook.

Staff calculated that it would cost $2,500 to look after the dogs until they would be ready to go to a new home.

A Facebook post said the dogs’ food and the supplies needed is now covered but more donations are always needed in case medical complications arise, as is common with rescue animals.

It’s disturbing to know that a person would rather abandon a dog and her puppies without any access to food and water and exposed to all kinds of dangers, rather than taking them to a shelter where they at least have a fighting chance.

What would you do if a sick, stray dog wandered into your backyard, in desperate need of help? The firefighters of East Cleveland Ohio knew exactly what to do when a sick mangy dog walked into their fire station.

The dog had a severe case of mange, she had wounds all over, and her skin was infected. And she happened to wander into the fire station. The dog followed one of the firefighters around, and it was like she was asking for help. Thankfully, the firefighters welcomed her, and they knew exactly what to do to help the poor dog. This was not the first time that a stray dog walked into their fire station. They immediately brought her to the vet, and there she got some love from the veterinarians too.

I think this dog is pretty smart (and lucky!) to have walked into the fire station. She got the help and the medical attention that she needed. A big thank you the firefighters of East Cleveland Ohio for helping this poor dog get a chance to live a happy life!

This dog now has a foster home who will take care of her until her mange is treated. And hopefully, she will find a loving forever home very soon!

Oftentimes, dogs can sense when we’re in danger. They’d do anything to keep us safe and stay by our side. So, just when Lood De Jager thought armed robbers were about to take his life, his dogs jumped into action. Niki, the older of his two Dobermans, ran toward the thief, whose gun was pointed at De Jager. The dog couldn’t bear the thought of losing her loving dad, so she made sure the gun was pointed away from him. The only problem was that the brave dog ended up taking the gunshot instead. But in the end, she saved her dad’s life.

An Armed Robbery

Thieves followed De Jager home after he stopped at the bank to withdraw his salary. They followed him home, knowing he had plenty of cash on hand. De Jager didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary until the strange vehicle parked right outside of his driveway.

“I first noticed them when they parked behind me in my driveway. They came to the window and told me to open up, so I did. They took my car keys and I just thought, they must take my car and go, it’s insured,” said De Jager.

However, the men wanted more than just a car. They repeatedly asked De Jager where the money was. Since they pointed a gun at his head, De Jager had no choice but to give up his salary. As he did so, his granddaughter opened the gate to see what was going on. De Jager’s daughter wasn’t far behind.

Once the gate was open, the two Doberman Pinschers raced out. Niki lunged at the attacker, knocking him to the ground. This stopped him from shooting De Jager, but it gave the brave pup a bullet wound instead.

Even Heroes Need Saving

The attacker fired three shots as Niki took him down. One hit Niki, one went through the gate, and the third was fired into the air. The second bullet almost hit De Jager’s daughter, but luckily, it just skimmed the edge of her pants. Unfortunately, the bullet directed at Niki went right through her back.

De Jager rushed the heroic pup to the vet after the incident. They were able to save her life because the family acted fast. Thankfully, the bullet missed all her vital organs, so her wound healed with only 14 stitches. She was able to return home that same night.

“She’s fine, no problems. She’s running, playing, and barking again,” said De Jager.

Despite feeling much better, De Jager said that Niki is still angry. She wants to make sure her dad stays safe at all times. Her protective instincts have made many of the neighbors afraid of her, but it has made De Jager feel so much better knowing his brave dog saved his life. When she got hurt, he was there to save her too. Dogs truly are man’s best friend.

When we put animals on board a plane, we put our trust in the staff that they will be safe and taken care of.

But in one shocking story, a group of dogs were found uncared for, left in storage during a delay—a neglect that left one poor dog dead.

According to CBS Chicago, 18 dogs were stopped at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago on August 9, after flying in from Amman, Jordan. The dogs reportedly did not have the proper vaccination papers for international travel, and were put in a cargo hold.

The dogs remained there for days, until police were tipped off and investigated — and found a shocking scene. The dogs were locked in cages in the warehouse, not receiving proper care, food or water.

Sadly, one of the dogs, a black lab, did not survive.

The deceased dog was on his way to a home in Alabama. A woman named Staci Yates bought the dog from a Russian breeder and was having him shipped overseas, and was shocked to hear the conditions her dog had gone through.

“We were never given an explanation,” she told CBS Chicago. “Nobody called. Nobody said this is what happened. All of a sudden they were just released.”

“Something needs to be done. This is ridiculous. These animals don’t deserve that.”

Staci puts the blame on the CDC, whose regulations slowed down the process. But others, including PETA, have charged the cargo company, Alliance Ground International, with the dogs’ mistreatment.

The company was issued two citations for cruelty to animals and neglect. They have denied responsibility, showing CBS receipts for the dogs’ care.

Meanwhile, 17 dogs survived: two are now in the care of animal control, while another agency is caring for the other 15.

What a heartbreaking situation. We hope these dogs are given the care they need, and those responsible face consequences for neglecting these poor animals for so long.

They sometimes say that ‘hope springs eternal’ and it was hope that keeps Roscoe going.

He was tied in an abandoned house with some straw to keep him warm. On a weekly basis, his family would drive by to give him some kibble. Roscoe kept his hope alive, even when his food and water ran out and hoped that he would be saved one day.

Things took a turn for the worse when the snow started to fall in Illinois. Suddenly, the dog wondered if he would make it until the morning.

As it turns out, someone was watching over the pup. A citizen called the Effingham County Animal Control and Shelter and reported what was happening with the little dog. Officer Vanessa Skavlem and Warden Michelle Shoot didn’t waste any time.

“They called us because it had just snowed the night before, and for southern Illinois, it was a large amount of snow and super cold,” Skavlem told The Dodo. “He was just shivering to death because he was less than 10 pounds.”

When Roscoe saw the officers arrive, he knew his troubles were over. “He was just so happy to see us, he came running out,” Skavlem said.

Roscoe was wrapped in a blanket and taken to the car. It was the first time he was warm in weeks. Roscoe was overjoyed: “He was just so happy, you could tell,” Skavlem added. “He would just whine over and over and over.”

They fed the pup some biscuits and gravy and then Roscoe relaxed into his rescuer’s arms.

Skavlem took a picture of the dog resting and posted it to Facebook with the caption: “We have a heated environment in there, and he has all his little blankies,” Skavlem said. “When he comes into the office, he’s so happy he wiggles and jumps up on you.”

Roscoe still whines when his rescuers are around, just to let them know he is still happy. “He does this adorable whine that’s almost as if he’s talking to you,” Skavlem said. “You know, it just feels like he has emotions and he’s grateful.”
