When you adopt a dog, you commit to loving them for the rest of their life. That includes giving them the best care when they get older and start having health issues.

Sadly, some owners are not up to that responsibility, and surrender their senior dogs to shelters even after owning them for years. That was the case for one 15-year-old dog who recently ended up back at the shelter.

But thankfully this poor old girl got a happy ending after a new family took her in, giving her the second chance she deserves.

On August 7, the Pennsylvania SPCA shared a sad update about a dog named Netty, who was adopted from their shelter 10 years ago. Netty, now a 15-year-old senior dog, was recently surrendered to the shelter, after her owners for the past decade said she was incontinent.

Despite the owners’ apparent concern about her health, the SPCA said they put Netty on medication and that she was “doing wonderfully.” According to Newsweek, the incontinence was due to a urinary tract infection, which was treated at their hospital.

But sadly, she was surrendered to the shelter, leaving her back to square one in her old age. “This old gal is sitting in a shelter in what could be her final days,” the SPCA wrote.

Despite the heartbreaking setback, the shelter was determined to find Netty a new home, “where she can spend whatever time she has left.”

Gillian Kocher, the Pennsylvania SPCA’s director of public relations, told Newsweek that it was “heartbreaking” that Netty was surrendered and that the dog was “fairly depressed,” but they remained optimistic.

“Instead of focusing on what had happened to bring her back to us, we chose to focus on how we can give her the best final days.”

It can be very difficult for senior dogs to find new homes: adopters often want young puppies, and don’t want the responsibilities and heartbreaks that come from taking in an older dog.

But thankfully, Netty soon found a perfect new family. Amy Kidd, a small-pet vet and owner of Pocopson Veterinary Station in West Chester, heard about Netty’s story and was moved, and knew it was meant to be.

Not only was she experienced with caring for senior pets, but her and her family had just suffered the loss of their own 12-year-old rescue dog, who died of cancer last month, Amy told Newsweek.

The family drove to Philadelphia and picked Netty up, giving her a loving new home to spend her final months and years in.

“Our ultimate goal is to love and spoil her every day she has left,” Amy told Newsweek. “We know we don’t have years left with her, but she will be treated like the queen she is from now on.”

Netty has been settling in well in her new home. She has her own giant teddy bear, and other dogs and cats to play with. “She immediately fell asleep on the couch with my daughter surrounded by our six house cats.”

And the Pennsylvania SPCA was thrilled to see Netty go off to a new home — this time, for good.

“We can’t thank everyone enough for spreading the word to help make this happen, and especially to Netty’s family for giving her the best final days,” they wrote on Facebook.

It’s heartbreaking that Netty was surrendered by her owners, but we’re so glad this kind family gave her a new home to spend the rest of her life in.

There’s just something special about your childhood friends, the bestie you grew up with. It’s a relationship that bonds you for life. The same bond can be formed with some dogs, including Adonis and Apollo, two German Shepherds who were surrendered to a high-kill animal shelter together.

They grew up together and then were given up together after their owners could no longer care for them.

The dogs were clearly terrified, yet took comfort in each other, hugging each other while at the shelter.

The staff took photos and shared them. Fortunately, they went viral pretty much overnight. That’s when a no-kill animal rescue group called A-Team Elite Rescue Dogs out of Long Island heard about Adonis and Apollo and decided to take them in.

Often dismissed are the long and sorrowful days of a shelter dog. While they do have their needs taken care of, these obligations are basic and hold no comparison to love and affection. Not to mention, the often and unfortunate fate that could be waiting for them should they not get adopted into a home. This happens too often at high-kill shelters. So what happens when an unloved shelter dog is adopted into a family and realizes their life is about to take a turn?

Much has been discussed on the impact of adoption, but seeing it for yourself goes beyond explanation. Such is the case with Benny, a sweet and shy shelter dog who was adopted from the high-kill Carson Animal Care Center in Gardena, California. Basically, Benny was on death row when he was finally adopted. So how did he react?

At first, you can see Benny busting at the seams with anticipation. He’s trying to keep it together as he looks around, sitting as still as he possibly can, while he waits to see if this will be his family. But you can totally tell he’s freaking out on the inside. I could imagine a dialogue like, “Are they mine, am I theirs, is this it?”

He’s really trying to keep it together. Just watching his anticipation basically had me balling. And then it happens, the red leash of ever after is presented and Benny bursts with excitement as he meets his new family! An instant bond is made as he is led by his new family to their car.

Two girls instantly fell in love with a dog named Rosie when they saw her online. However, Rosie was in a kill shelter in Georgia, which was far off from where the girls lived. So even if Rosie was up for adoption, the little girls couldn’t do anything about it.

But the girls were so fascinated by Rosie that they would check up on her adoption status every day. One day, the girls’ hearts sank when they saw that Rosie would be put down if she doesn’t get an adoption commitment soon. The girls cried their eyes out, as they didn’t know how to help Rosie.

Unbeknownst to the girls, their parents were very aware of their girls’ misery. They decided to approach the shelter and talk about a way to transport Rosie to their city. They were going to adopt her and surprise the girls!

In this video, we see the girls’ mother surprise them on the streets with Rosie in her arms. It’s a wild mixture of emotions as the girls can’t believe what they’re seeing and slowly realize their parents’ sweet gesture!

The two girls cry happy tears as they embrace Rosie. Rosie too shares her gratefulness with cuddly hugs as she senses that these two girls have saved her with their love. Rosie and the girls form an inseparable trio now. What a touching rescue story!

Sioux City, like other United States cities, had a strict ban on Pit Bulls. When Pits were discovered in city shelters, they were put in the back because they weren’t available for adoption. Angel was a Pit Bull with a bad reputation who had a nasty habit of displaying her teeth. She would also growl if people got too close to her.

Then a Karma rescue volunteer came to the shelter. She was brokenhearted when she learned Angel would be euthanized in a few days. Something had to be done. A behavioral specialist friend of hers came to meet Angel and took her out for a walk.

The volunteer wanted to save Angel. But the ban in the city made this impossible. She couldn’t adopt Angel herself and all the other rescues were at capacity with so many Pit Bulls. The rescuer took her out of the shelter and said she would spend some time with her and then take her to the vet to be put down. During this time she also sent one last text to Hug Hearts Foundation in Los Angeles.

She explained to the rescue group that Angel was being put down in a little over an hour and that’s when the person on the phone said, “We will take her!”

The Pit Bull was flown to Los Angeles. They trained and socialized her during the next few weeks. The Pit Bull ban in Sioux City was unexpectedly canceled! It appears that more and more cities are catching on, and learning, that it’s not the breed that matters but rather how those dogs are treated.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, people all over the world have been forced to stay at home to help flatten the curve and slow this outbreak.

But one good thing that has come out of this is that more people have been fostering and adopting pets from animal shelters while they’re quarantined at home.

One animal shelter in Florida city is celebrating an amazing milestone: every single dog in one of their three kennel buildings has been adopted!

One of the Friends of Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control shelter’s kennels is completely empty for the first time since they’ve opened. This kennel is the shelter’s stray housing kennel and adoption overflow kennel.

“Thank you to the shelter staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to care for, find homes for, and advocate for the pets who come through these doors; thank you to our incredible foster parents who open their heart and homes to thousands of pets each year; thank you to everyone who has opted to adopt a shelter pet – whether it be here or from any of the other amazing organizations out there,” the shelter wrote on Facebook.

While one entire kennel has been adopted out, they still have some dogs available for adoption or foster in their main kennel, along with cats, horses and a pig.

This puppy named Reuben was brought to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary after a family found him running on the Navajo Nation reservation, in desperate need of care.

The first thing rescuers did was give him a much-needed bath and medical exam.

Things would only go up from here. Reuben was soon given his own play area, soft blankets, and lots of toys, things he has probably never had before.

Reuben was given a clean bill of health and underwent a successful neuter surgery. It was now time for him to find a forever home!

Less than a week after arriving at the sanctuary, Reuben had already found loving new parents, Krystina and Jason, who welcomed him into their home!

Krystina and Jason have followed Best Friends for a while now and have been wanting to add a new pup to their family, so they felt this was meant to be.

They arrived at the shelter to pick Reuben up, and he greeted them with tail wags. They hit it off right away, and it’s obvious that they are a perfect match!

Every shelter dog just wants to get adopted, but sadly it can take some longer than others to find their forever home. Some pets wait months or even years to get adopted.

Some dogs even end up with the sad distinction of being their shelter’s longest resident. But many shelters will work extra hard to finally find these dogs a home after seeing them passed over so many times.

And when that day finally arrives, it’s an occasion worth celebrating. That was the case for one dog, who got a special send-off after a long stay in the shelter.

Meet Big Mac:

Big Mac was surrendered to McKamey Animal Center last December. His owners were moving and said they didn’t have time for him.

The dog needed some time to adjust to his new surroundings. “It was very apparent that he didn’t trust everyone right away,” Lauren Mann, the shelter’s advancement manager, told The Dodo. “He did warm up with treats and when he was out of the kennel and in the play yard.”

But over time, Big Mac’s personality began to shine through. The center described him as “a big softy at heart” who loved to play.

However, adopters apparently didn’t see it that way. While the shelter tried to find Big Mac a new home, he was constantly passed over, until he became the shelter’s longest resident.

No one understood why Big Mac couldn’t find a home. But after 260 days at the shelter, he finally had a breakthrough.

Lauren said that a shelter volunteer decided to take him in as a foster, and Big Mac quickly made himself at home. Seeing how much he fit in, including getting along with the foster mom’s other dog and cat, she eventually decided to make it official.

After a longer-than-usual wait, Big Mac finally had a forever home. It was a big day at the McKamey Animal Center, and as Mac finally left for his new home, his old friends gathered outside to say one last goodbye.

And in a special, heartwarming moment, the shelter workers gave him a standing ovation:

Saying goodbye to a dog you’ve cared for for so long can be a bittersweet moment, but they were all happy to see this lonely dog finally find a loving home — especially since it was with one of their own volunteers.

“Although we will miss him, we know he will be well taken care of and absolutely spoiled in his new furever home,” the McKamey Animal Center wrote on Facebook.

We’re so glad Big Mac finally found a good home, and it’s so sweet to see his friends give him such a nice send-off.

All of the dogs in this shelter ended up getting adopted — except for two Pitties, Bowman and Papa. It’s usually the smaller dogs who go first with the Pit Bulls at the very end, and that’s why these two sat here watching all of their friends get adopted leaving them behind. But that made Joe work even harder to find them homes, and he made them each a promise to do so!

Bowman and Papa could only sit in their kennels as they watched the other dogs received their orange adoption slips, and Joe swears they picked up on that. So the shelter worker took it upon himself to spoil these dogs until their day would come.

His goal was to show them that this was all temporary while also providing the mental and physical stimulation they needed to stay healthy. He’d even come in on the weekends to see how they were doing and give them attention!

And wouldn’t you know it, that day would finally come. The hard work and persistence would all pay off! Being able to bring that orange slip to each of their kennels meant mission accomplished, and Bowman and Papa couldn’t have been happier to meet their new families! 🙂

After 14 years, a Spaniel named Tandie is back at the same rescue she was originally adopted from in the UK. She’s now being dubbed the UK’s “unluckiest” dog — but it’s actually a blessing in disguise that she ended up back in the same shelter.

In 2007, Tandie, her mom, and her seven siblings were brought to the UK’s RSPCA when they were found as strays. They all went off to loving homes — but now, after her owner passed away, Tandie is homeless yet again.

Sadly, Tandie could not be cared for by family members and is back at the RSPCA in Columb.

Since her last stay there, Tandie has developed some ailments that come with age. She is now completely deaf and partially blind.

The RSPCA is looking for a quiet home where Tandie can spend her golden years.

“We cared for Tandie 14 years ago and we still will today, said an RSPCA spokesperson. “She was adopted from us as a puppy and had a wonderful life with the most incredible family.”

It’s a heartbreaking situation for Tandie, who has been with the same family for 14 years. Now, she must find another home that will love her as much as her prior family did.

“She has very limited vision and is completely deaf,” the RSPCA continued. “She also has arthritis, various lumps and bumps, and a skin condition which she has daily treatment for. Her years have caught up with her since we last took care of her.”

Due to this, the RSPCA is looking for a permanent foster home for Tandie where she can live out the rest of her days and still be covered financially by the rescue.

“For these reasons, we’re looking for an end of life foster home locally to our center so that we can continue to financially and medically support Tandie, and her fosterers, for the rest of her days,” the RSPCA said.

Since her story hit the web, Tandie has been shared hundreds of times. With luck, she will find the perfect home in no time.

She has the sweetest, most loving eyes and looks to be a wonderful addition to any family. She adores people and would be best in a home without other pets so she can be the center of her humans’ attention.
