One of the most trusted officers of the Maywood Police Department has passed away. Remi, a Bloodhound K9, was a crucial member of the New Jersey police force, using her powerful sense of smell to find missing individuals, including children and Alzheimer’s patients, and locate violent criminals. Remi had a strong presence in the community, forming an unbreakable bond with her partner, Detective Christopher Nichols, and was an ambassador for her breed.

Last week, Nichols received devastating news about his faithful partner. Remi was diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer and spent her final days being spoiled by her family before passing away early Sunday morning in Nichols’ arms.

The heartbreaking news was shared on the department’s Facebook page, where Nichols expressed his grief and the impact Remi had on his life. “Today, after 5 1/2 years of Remi giving me everything she had, performing beyond anything I could have ever expected, and being my best friend through some of the most challenging times of life, I had to make the most painful decision of my life… There is a hole in our hearts that will never be filled and our family is forever changed. We miss her terribly already…”

Remi was a K9 hero who will never be forgotten. The community and those who had the honor to work alongside her sent their condolences to Nichols and his family. Patrick Reynolds, former Assistant Director at the School of Criminal Justice at Fairleigh Dickinson University, praised Nichols and Remi’s accomplishments in the past few years and offered his condolences to the Maywood Police Department. “Please know that we all hurt for you, your family, and the entire Maywood P.D.”
