K9 police dogs do important work for their communities, but it isn’t a job every canine is cut out for.

All dogs are different, and some would just rather make friends than fight crime. So when one dog was told he wasn’t cut out for the police force, he landed an even better job that he was perfectly suited for.

A German shepherd dog named Gavel, from Queensland, Australia, came from a “long line of pedigree,” and everyone expected he would follow family tradition and join the Queensland Dog Squad.

However, it soon became clear that Gavel wasn’t cut out for the job.

The police officers training him discovered that the the dog “did not display the necessary aptitude for a life on the front line,” according to the BBC.

The reason: he was too friendly, more interested in meeting people and making new friends than tackling criminals.

But Gavel didn’t have too much a reason to be sad… he soon landed a much nicer gig, one he was perfect for.

Gavel was fostered at the home of the Queensland governor, so when the police job fell through, the governor gave him a job in the government.

The dog was made into an honorary royal greeter: his official title is “Gavel VRD,” for “Vice-Regal Dog.”

Gavel, with his very own status and uniform, enjoys his new life, and brings lots of joy to those around him.

“[He has] brought untold joy to the lives of the governor, Mrs de Jersey, Government House staff, and the thousands of Queenslanders who have since visited the estate,” the office of Governor Paul de Jersey said.

It’s true that when one door closes, another door opens. Gavel might not have cut it as a police dog, but he definitely found the right job for him!
