When a dog fully sets their mind to something, anything is possible. Abby the four-year-old Lab and Pit Bull mix made that very clear when she was lost. She spent her days alone looking for someone special, and somehow, she knew exactly where to look: Walmart!
The smart pup strolled into the Walmart entrance without a care in the world. She figured the “no dogs” rule didn’t apply to her since she was on a mission. She didn’t find the human she was looking for right away, but she sure started a commotion.
Dog on the Loose
Danielle Robinette, a customer sales associate, was the first to notice the dog enter the store. Abby had no collar, service dog vest, or leash, so Robinette knew something was wrong. Being an avid animal lover, she quickly got up and followed the pup. The security guard was right beside her.
“She would just stop and look up at people. It looked like she was looking for someone,” Robinette said.
And she was! Abby was looking around with her nose in the air, hoping to see or smell someone familiar. That’s when June Rountree, the cashier at register 6, spotted the dog. By then, Abby had caused a commotion, so many employees and customers tried to catch the runaway dog.
Rountree rushed toward the dog and hugged her effortlessly. Abby cuddled with her in return, which was the first time she’d stopped running in the store. Everyone was confused, but they quickly gathered a leash for the dog.
A Walmart Reunion
Once Rountree finally calmed down a little, she explained her excitement to Robinette. Abby was her dog who she adopted as a stray several years ago. The pup got lost three weeks ago when she broke out of her collar while walking. Rountree searched every inch of the neighborhood for her and checked in with the local shelter, but the pup was long gone.
“I just could not believe it was her, I felt like I was in a dream. I started in tears and I couldn’t talk with anybody,” Rountree said.
Rountree was able to take Abby home during her lunch break, where Abby napped on her dog bed and played with her Chiweenie sister Coco as if nothing had changed. Robinette and everyone else who witnessed the event are still in awe of the pup’s bravery and dedication. The story has since been shared thousands of times on Facebook.
Everyone is still in disbelief about how Abby found her way to her mom’s workplace. Rountree lives about 1.7 miles away from work, but two busy roads are in between the two locations. So, how Abby got there and found her mom will remain a mystery. But Rountree is just happy to have her best friend home again.
