Dogs are known as man’s best friend, yet some dogs have a caring attitude that extends to fellow animals. Even to animals that they usually chase and eat.

While out walking with her owner, Kenai, a 3-year-old Golden Retriever, spotted a wounded bald eagle and began barking insistently, reports GrindTV. The injured eagle was perched on a branch near the water.

The eagle hopped away, afraid. Kenai and her owner returned the next day to complete the rescue mission. When they returned they followed the eagle tracks left in the snow.

Kenai tracked down the eagle, and with help from the Department of Natural Resources, the bird was taken in for some much-needed health care, notes BarkPost. The poor eagle’s feathers were frozen and he was suffering from a shoulder injury. Upon further examination, he showed signs of lead poisoning.

The eagle is expected to make a full recovery after receiving treatment. Thanks to Kenai, the eagle is going to make it. If he did not get help when he did, he probably would have died.

The dog meat trade is notoriously cruel. Dogs are bred for their meat, never getting to experience the world outside their cage. Some dogs were once family pets, who were stolen from happy homes and sold to farms. In some cultures, people believe that fear makes the meat taste better, and dogs are viciously abused before slaughter for the sake of “flavor.”

But the sentiment toward dog meat is changing. What was once thought of as a traditional food or delicacy in many eastern countries is now falling out of favor. A recent poll from Humane Society International shows that most South Koreans have zero interest in eating dog.

84% of those polled say they have never eaten dog meat, and would not try it if offered.
59% say that they support banning the consumption of dog meat altogether.
57% of South Koreans think that the eating of dog meat reflects poorly on their country. This is a huge upswing from the only 37% that said so in 2017.

This situation went almost unnoticed before because it was unpleasant to discuss the suffering of dogs or the presence of dog meat farms. But in recent years the media has given the dog meat trade more attention, helping raise awareness and opposition to the slaughter of dogs.

A younger generation of South Koreans is rejecting old ideas and becoming more open to having dogs as family members, not food. This is excellent news for dog lovers everywhere.

Humane Society International is working hard to spread the word about how dog meat farms really operate and are shutting them down one by one. They recently closed a 17th dog meat farm in South Korea, saving nearly 200 dogs who had been living in stacked, cramped cages. Nara Kim, HSI Korea’s Dog Meat Campaign Manager, says that, though they’ve shut down several farms before, this rescue was especially heartbreaking.

“Every dog meat farm I’ve visited has a horrible stench of feces and rotting food, but there was something different about this dog farm, it had a smell of death. The conditions were truly pitiful, and when we found these dogs they had looks of utter despair on their faces that will haunt us forever.

“Many of them are covered in painful sores and wounds from neglect, some have inflamed eyes and peer out blindly from their cage. I feel grateful they can no longer see this horrible place they live in, and when they finally receive veterinary care and can open their eyes, they will never have to endure this hopelessness again.“

Thanks to HSI, these dogs are now on their way to a much better life. All 196 dogs were tested for canine influenza, vaccinated, and after a 30-day hold, will be transported to rescues in the U.S. to find loving families of their own.

The owner of the farm, Kim Il-Hwan, says the last few years have been especially difficult. The industry is in decline, and he can see the writing on the wall.

“Dog meat consumption is really low and is getting lower. I don’t think anyone under 50 years old eats dogs anymore. The media coverage of the animal protection movement has changed people’s minds so much. There’s no future in dog farming.”

HSI is unable to shut down farms by force. Instead, they convince farmers to give up their way of life and adopt a new one. It hurts us to think of dogs being used for their meat, but for farmers in countries that have always accepted the eating of dog meat, it’s no different than raising chickens or cows for slaughter. But as consumption decreases, farmers are becoming more eager to get out of the business. Like other former farmers, Kim will receive financial and career assistance from HSI in return for surrendering his dogs and leaving the dog meat trade. He says he is now looking forward to a new beginning in construction.

There are still an estimated 2,800 registered dog meat farms operating in South Korea, but the decline of dog meat consumption and the changing attitude among the people could mean more closures and at a faster pace.

If you’ve ever rescued a dog or visited a shelter then you know first hand how much they appreciate your love and attention. This was no different for a sweet girl named Penny who was recently rescued in Georgia. Penny was so grateful that she just couldn’t stop hugging the woman who saved her.

A Last-Minute Rescue

Lia Domingo went to the Augusta Animal Shelter earlier this week ready to rescue a dog in need. She was working with The Pixel Fund and headed to the shelter to save a Pitbull named Peety. Lia was surprised when she was asked at the last minute to rescue another dog named Penny. Of course, Lia couldn’t say no and thank goodness she didn’t!

Penny is a precious 1-year-old Corgi mix. She has an eye injury which gives her an even more endearing appearance. Sadly for Penny, her eye injury meant that all of the local rescues were unwilling to help her.

“When I saw her, it just broke my heart because she was very scared and not very receptive. She was very nervous,” Lia told MSN. “She didn’t even want to look at me the first day. She just cowered.”

They Headed East But There Was One Minor Setback

Lia loaded up Penny and Peety and hit the road. The trio had an hour and a half drive ahead of them. They set out for Sparta, Georgia where they were going to relay with another volunteer who would transport Penny and Peety even further. Lia hit a figurative roadblock on the way when the shelter called and asked her to bring Peety back. His family had called to claim him, so Lia turned around and headed back towards Augusta.

Lia and The Pixel Fund collaborated and decided it was best to just leave both Penny and Peety at the shelter that night. This would ensure Lia would only make one trip to Sparta if Peety’s family didn’t come get him. It broke Lia’s heart to leave both dogs at the shelter after giving them a quick taste of freedom.

A Promise Made Is A Promise Kept

Penny especially pulled at Lia’s heartstrings, so she made her a promise.

“I gave her a kiss and whispered in her ears, ‘Don’t worry, Penny. You know we’re going to be back. We won’t let you down. I promise,’” Domingo said.

Luckily for Peety, his family picked him up that night. The next day the once shy little girl was now bursting with excitement when Lia returned for Penny. She seemed to recognize Lia and couldn’t wait to be reunited!

Penny and Lia loaded up in the car and that’s when Penny just melted into Lia’s arms. She pressed herself against Lia’s chest and laid her head on her savior’s shoulders. This inevitably brought tears to Lia’s eyes.

“She put her little arms around me and wouldn’t let me go… she knew she was finally safe,” Lia said.

Penny demanded her love and affection the entire way so Lia gladly kept one hand free for snuggles and scratches. Lia safely made the drive to Sparta with one hand on the wheel and the other comforting sweet Penny. She whimpered and cried and asked for more if Lia even thought about putting her hand back on the wheel.

A Welcomed Plot Twist Saves A Life

Penny was checked out by the vet once she arrived in Sparta. She was in good health despite her eye. This little love bug is now known as Chloe Olivia, and she is patiently waiting for her forever home.

Deborah Kirkland is the executive director of The Pixel Fund in Georgia. She had helped arrange Penny’s – or Chloe’s rescue and she firmly believes everything happens for a reason.

“Even though we did not get to save the pit bull… he was put in our path so that we would find out about Chloe Olivia — aka Penny — and save this little girl who is just as deserving of a new family and a new life,” Deborah told MSN.

A loose dog ended up in the most dangerous place imaginable recently—but thanks to a heroic rescue has survived to get a second chance.

According to WLBT, a dog was found stranded on near the ledge of the Westbound Bridge over the Mississippi River in Natchez, 120 feet above the water.

The poor dog was stuck and could’ve easily fell to its death… but luckily, she was discovered by bridge inspectors, who quickly called the police.

Then, rescue technician Ryan Nataluk decided to climb over and rescue the dog himself.

It was a long, terrifying ordeal for the poor dog, but she calmed down knowing she was in safe hands.

“I went down there, gave her some water, patted her on her head, just kind of talk calmly to her and the dog was great,” Nataluk told WLBT. “She had been there for a while; probably a couple days.”

“She was probably cold and everything, but when we brought her up her demeanor changed greatly, she seem certainly happy, she was sniffing around wagging her tail, she definitely was happy.”

Nataluk was the hero of the day… but it turns out, he didn’t just save one life. A vet checkup revealed that the dog was pregnant with puppies!

And the story has a happy ending for the dog: she now has a forever home. A local man adopted her and named the dog Bridgette.

Venus the white-furred German Shepherd was barely a year old when her owner abandoned her in a vast stretch of desert along the freeway. For several days, Venus soaked herself in a small pool of water to shield herself from the consistent 100F heat. Eventually, someone noticed her plight and gave a rescue call to “Hope For Paws”.

When the rescuers arrived at the freeway to retrieve a starving Venus, they immediately realized that the scared dog had a tendency to run away from strangers. To prevent any road mishap, the rescuers waited all day to find a safe opening to grab Venus. But after failing to gain the dog’s trust, the rescuers were forced to use a tranquilizer dart to get her out of the desert safely.

As it was too late to return to the shelter, the rescuers took Venus to a mobile vet unit and gave her emergency medical aid. The dog was terrified when she initially gained consciousness, but she warmed up to her rescuer by morning! Later in the day, Venus was taken to the shelter and given a much-needed bath.

This video was made to honor Venus’ survival story and help her find a forever home. Thanks to this effort by Hope For Paws, Venus soon found a family that fell in love with her. Today, she is thriving in her forever home and living the best life as a pampered and goofy pooch!

A very tiny and stray pup, all on his own, must have heard voices nearby him. Simply knowing he needed help, the little pup came over from another yard, hurting from the painful wounds on his little body. He was only 3 weeks old. What had happened to his mother and what could have caused such an injury?

The rescuer picks the puppy up and notices that he’s not just injured but he’s also malnourished. It’s likely he had been on his own for a few days. Imagine how scared this little one must’ve been! We are sad that he’s hurt but thrilled that he found help. At such a young age, he understood that he couldn’t handle all this on his own.

The tiny pup was starving and covered in hundreds of fleas. As he lapped up some formula, the rescuer could see that his blood count was also quite low. Poor pup!

Before dressing his wound, the rescuer notices there are maggots in it. She kills and removes them with a special powder. When she dresses his wounds, he makes noises we can identify as protests against the bandages. Yet we know that they must be there in order to keep his wound dry and clean.

With some time and healing, the tiny puppy makes tremendous progress. It’s amazing what a good diet, proper medical care, and lots of love can do. As you can see, he is certainly a fan of his new food!

The puppy’s wound is almost fully healed and his rescuer is fostering him. He will soon be big enough to go to his forever home. There are many willing adopters interested in the entire litter of pups!

We are so grateful that this little guy knew he needed help and came to the rescuers when he did.

April Eells’s mom was driving on a freeway in Portland, Oregon, when she saw something get thrown off the overpass.

At first, she thought it was a bag, but she pulled over immediately to double-check. Sadly, it turned out to be a Pit Bull, but the woman just happened to be at the right place at the right time to save his life.

The woman called Eells in a panic, who just happens to work at a veterinary clinic in Tualatin. She rushed the dog there, who ended up having broken bones and torn ligaments, and needed extensive surgery to repair them.

Eells’ family began raising money for the surgeries, which were thankfully a success.

Eells formed a very special bond with the Pit Bull, who they have since named Hank, and her parents decided to permanently adopt him.

He is now recovering comfortably at his new forever home, and is expected to make a full recovery.

Not only did fate bring Eells’ mother to the right place at the right time, but Hank is also very symbolic of Eells’ daughter, who tried to commit suicide by jumping off an overpass last year, but thankfully survived.

“So, we can’t just give up on him,” Eells told KPTV. “They both have made it. And my own daughter had surgery again today and he had surgery last week, so I just feel like they just for whatever reason…there’s this parallel and he came into our lives for a reason, and my mom just said we’re not giving up on him.”

Unfortunately, it is not known who threw Hank off the overpass, but Eells is reminding people that there are plenty of options if you no longer want your pet, rather than discard them in a harmful way.
