There are so many stray dogs on the streets fending for themselves.

Thankfully, there are some kind people in the world willing to go out of their way to give these animals some food or warmth.

But after one hungry stray asked a couple for some scraps of food, she got more than she ever could’ve dreamed of.

When Jacks Anderson and his wife stopped at a new lunch spot last month, they got an unexpected visitor: a stray pittie, who seemed to be hungrily eyeing their meals.

“There was a sweet little Pibble laying on the sidewalk, clearly hoping for a bite but too polite to ask,” Jacks wrote on TikTok. “The staff shooed her away and we lost sight of her.”

But that wasn’t the end: after leaving the lunch spot, they ran into the hungry dog a few blocks away — and decided to help her out.

They gave the dog some of their leftover chicken. But even with this act of kindness, the dog seemed hesitant to accept their help. Jacks said the dog kept her distance with him, but trusted his wife.

But after getting a closer look, it became clear that this dog had had a rough life, perhaps even before ending up on the streets.

“She was definitely skittish, but based on the scars on her face & body, it’s understandable,” Jacks wrote.

Still, the dog happily accepted their meal — and the couple realized the dog wasn’t just eating for herself: she was heavily pregnant.

Realizing the dog needed even more help, they decided to take her in. They named the dog Poppy.

After getting her in the car, Poppy suddenly had a look of peaceful serenity. The TikTok video shows her staring out the window. It’s as if the dog suddenly realized she was safe and in good hands, and Jacks recalls her having tears in her eyes.

“We just kind of paused at that moment to allow Poppy to calm a bit, but honestly, she was far more calm than I anticipated,” he told The Dodo.

“I started to record the video of my wife comforting her, and I realized that Poppy had tears coming from her eyes. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that in a dog, and it definitely made an impact.”

Jacks shared the heartwarming rescue on TikTok, and people were clearly moved: the video has over 14 million views.

But that was just the beginning of their story.

A “Part 2” follow-up video shows that the couple brought the dog home — and thankfully a check-up gave her a clean bill of health.

“She’s clean & full of puppies,” Jacks wrote.

Considering all she’s been through — and the fact that she was heavily pregnant — Poppy was more healthy and full of life than they could’ve imagined.

“We’re going at her speed,” Jacks wrote. “Which is pretty quick, as it turns out.”

It always takes some time for stray dogs to acclimate to a new home, but Poppy seems to have warmed up quickly, despite her initial skittishness. The couple say she’s made herself at home and is a very loving dog.

“Poppy spent her first couple of days with us just one on one,” Jacks told The Dodo. “She slept nearly all the time and acclimated to the couch pretty quickly. In the last day or two, she’s become far more active, showing interest in the other dogs and following me around instead of sleeping.”

It was also only a matter of time before Poppy gave birth, and they were eagerly on “Puppy Watch.”

Jacks’ TikTok videos reveal that the dog delivered nine beautiful, healthy puppies, six males, and three females.

The puppies will remain in their care until they old enough to be adopted out to forever homes.

But Poppy has already found hers: while the couple originally only intended to foster Poppy, they decided to adopt her for good!

“Poppy will stay with us. We’re learning more about her all the time and building trust with her,” Jacks told The Dodo. “I don’t want to send her to someone else to make her go through that again. She’s earned an easier go of things.”

Stefanie and Duane Lindsay spent a fun-filled day at the beach with their three-year-old dog, Roo. But the day took a turn for the worst after they ended up in a bad car accident on their way home.

While the couple was driving back to their El Dorado County, California home from Bodega Bay, another driver crashed into them while going 65 mph on the highway.

The couple’s car flipped and landed upright in a nearby grassy field, but thankfully they only suffered minor injuries. They immediately checked on each other before realizing that Roo was no long in the back seat.

They saw that the back window had been blown out, and began to think the worst. After forcefully being thrown out of the window, Stefanie was sure Roo was dead.

Despite bleeding from his head, Duane began crawling around on the floor to look for Roo while Stefanie called 911. While she waited for an ambulance to arrive, she searched the road and nearby grass for Roo, but to no avail.

Once emergency personnel arrived, Duane was transported to the hospital, while firefighters and highway patrol used thermal sensors to scan the area for Roo.

Duane was diagnosed with a fractured sternum, but since Stefanie was unable to be with her husband due to Covid-19, she returned to the area to search for her beloved pup.

Although she still couldn’t find her, she refused to give up. She turned to social media and posted about Roo, trying to garner the attention of as many rescue groups in the area as possible.

At this point, even strangers in the community joined in on the search for Roo.

14 hours after Roo had gone missing, the couple saw a tip that someone posted on Facebook. It led them to a neighborhood three miles away from the accident, where Roo was contently sitting under a tree.

“I lost it,” Stefanie told CNN. “I fell to my knees in the middle of the cul-de-sac, waiting for her. It took her a couple of seconds to register who I was, but once she did, she just comes running to me.”

Thankfully, aside from road rash and soft tissue damage, Roo was going to be okay.

Stefanie hopes their story will encourage people to buy their pets a safety harness seatbelt.

The post Couple adopts rescue dog before meeting him. When the door opens to reveal him they “lose it” appeared first on G2a-ltc.

Whether or not you believe everything happens for a reason, this story makes a strong case for silver linings. This spring, Ian Azeredo and his wife Linda Farkas adopted Otter, a spunky mixed breed rescue dog, from St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison, New Jersey. If it hadn’t been for a terrible skydiving accident though, they never would have met their beloved dog and best friend.

In July of 2019, Azeredo was on a skydiving trip, something he had done hundreds of times before. This time, he ended up hitting the ground at 60 miles per hour, severely injuring himself in the collision. It ultimately put him into a coma. Farkas recalled:

“He spent two months in the ICU in Morristown. And they wouldn’t let you eat in the ICU. So I went one day to shovel lunch in my face real quick and saw this couple putting up therapy dog posters. They were local to Morristown, and they actually recommended St. Hubert’s.”

Azeredo spent nearly nine months in recovery at this hospital right down the road from St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center. Therapy dogs from there also came to visit the hospital. Azeredo mentioned how valuable these visits were:

“I was a broken toy there, just kind of hanging on. The one good thing was they had these therapy dogs that would come in and just kind of say hi to people. A lot of them were from St. Hubert’s.”

Farkas also noticed how important the doggie visits were to her husband.

“Besides the incredible medical team, the best thing about the hospital was their volunteer therapy dog program. Even when in excruciating pain, the friendly, judgement-free dogs would bring a smile to Ian’s face.”

Finding Otter

When Azeredo was well enough to leave the hospital, the couple knew they had to return to St. Hubert’s. With lockdown beginning, they now felt they had the time to give proper care and attention to a dog.

When a volunteer directed them to a tail-wagging Labrador Retriever/Hound mix, he jumped up on Azeredo’s wheelchair and licked his face.

“Immediately, I said, ‘This is the boy, right here.’”

They named him Otter, after the Twin Otter plane the couple jumped out of on their first date in 2013.

“He doesn’t always behave perfectly, but he is our best friend. When Ian is in pain, Otter joins him on the couch. When I want an adventure buddy, Otter will enthusiastically hike or go paddle boarding with me.”

Otter can be a bit rambunctious, but he brought them so much joy after they experienced such tragedy.

“It is impossible not to grieve our lost time and capabilities, but Otter never fails to cheer us up. Life after trauma is full of uncertainties but adopting Otter has inspired us to happily move forward with our next chapter.”

Giving Back To The Shelter That Brought Them Their Best Friend

Since Otter did so much for the family, they wanted to give back to the shelter who did so much for him. The Petco Foundation‘s Holiday Wishes campaign invites adopters to share their stories for the chance to earn grant awards for the organizations they adopted from. Farkas submitted their story and won an award, bringing in a lot of money for the rescue.

Azeredo now plans to have Otter certified as a therapy dog, so he can join the ranks of the pups visiting Morristown Memorial Hospital.

“I remember being in that bed. It’s hard to explain the frustration and shock that comes with being there and having so much uncertainty. Hopefully, I can help some people out by just relating, talking when they are going through a similar nightmare.”

Thank goodness for therapy dog programs!

For most of us dog lovers, our dogs sleep on the bed with us and they even occupy more space than we do! And that’s true for the couple featured in the video below!

Chris and Mariesa Hughes, a couple from New York, run the Mr. Mo Project–an organization dedicated in rescuing senior dogs.

Chris and Mariesa also adopted senior dogs of their own, seven dogs to be exact! Every dog they adopted had suffered some form of abuse. So the Hughes family opened their hearts and their home to give these dogs the love they deserve.

They love their dogs so much, they want them to be very comfortable; so they let them sleep on the bed. Now these dogs are not tiny breeds; they are mostly Pit Bulls or Greyhounds.

So in order for everyone to fit, Chris and Mariesa had to buy a second bed!

As many pet owners can attest, animals have a way of becoming a real part of the family.

Five years ago, Estelle Harris of Derbyshire, United Kingdom, adopted a bull mastiff puppy she named Bruce. The two quickly bonded, and Estelle often refers to her now 5-year-old dog as her, “kid with four legs” and confesses that she loves him “more than anything.”

When Bruce was just a year old, Estelle met and fell in love with Daniel Harris. Daniel and their family adore Bruce as well, and when the couple began planning their May 4 wedding they knew that their dog would play a big role in the day.

Unfortunately, in December the family discovered Bruce had white gums and a blue tongue, so they rushed him to the emergency vet where he was diagnosed with pleural effusion. The vets set to work draining the fluid surrounding his lungs and heart, but not before warning the family that Bruce’s condition was critical and he might not survive.

Bruce was sent for more scans, where a mass the size of a grapefruit was found in his chest. As the vets prepared to operate to remove the tumor, Estelle and Daniel were in pieces realizing they might have to say goodbye to their best friend.

“I was told to say bye to him over the weekend as he may not make it through the major operation,” Estelle said. “Monday came and he made it through the seven-hour operation and had to have some ribs removed due to the cancer mass.”

“We brought him home on Thursday as he had to stay in for the draining of the area with tubes in him,” she continued. “We got the results around a week and a half later. I remember it well. I fell to the floor as it was hemangiosarcoma, the worst cancer he could possibly have. This cancer is aggressive and fast and even with chemo he would only have six months the vet said. My whole world is falling apart knowing that he’s dying and there’s nothing I can do about it.”

Once Estelle and Daniel heard Bruce’s bleak diagnosis, they knew they had to do something to ensure that their faithful companion would be by their side when they walked down the aisle. They immediately made the decision to move their wedding date up four months, throwing a new ceremony plan together in just three weeks.

“It was either change the date or not get married at all,” Estelle admitted, so they forfeited several deposits and apologized to the guests who couldn’t make the new date.

“Bruce is so funny and very much a mummy’s boy. Danny has two children, I have none. Bruce is my child, a four-legged one but I still love him as much as a human child. He’s my world and nothing will ever come close to me and Bruce.”

In February 2019, Estelle and Daniel went to Burton’s registry office to tie the knot, and a very dapper-looking Bruce was right there to witness the big event. Estelle’s mom even made Bruce his very own waistcoat to match Danny’s.

“It was important to have him in my photos. Our families totally understood as they are all dog lovers and know how much Bruce means to us,” Estelle said.

According to the vet’s prognosis, Bruce currently has two more months to live, but Estelle will never lose hope. She’s put the dog on a holistic path of treatment that includes diet changes, and she says he’s doing “really well.” They’re even hoping that he lives long enough to accompany the family on the vacation to Cornwall this year.

No matter how much longer Bruce has to spend with his family, they will always have the memories of how he looked on their wedding day. Estelle and Daniel say they have no regrets about changing their date, even though they lost money and gained stress by doing so. It was all worthwhile to have their beloved family member by their side.

We love our dogs like family, so why not give them the best of everything—including a cozy bed to sleep on? In fact, research shows that women actually sleep better next to dogs than they do next to humans!

If you have multiple dogs, it may be difficult to sleep next to all of your pups since your bed only allows for so much room. For Chris and Mariesa Hughes, sleeping comfortably became a struggle because they slept with not just one dog, but eight rescue dogs!

They figured out how to make it work for all of their beloved dogs without them being kicked off the bed every night, so they had a brilliant concept.

The couple from Clifton Park, New York hired Mike Ford, a furniture maker who loves dogs, to construct the “mega-bed.” This bed was enormous and took six months to build. It has two mattresses combined which makes it even bigger.

The bed has a king-size mattress on top with a full-size mattress sideways below it. The headboard is six feet tall and has cute hand-carved paw prints. The bed also has side drawers and built-in stairs to help the older dogs get onto it.

The Hughes’ are founders of “The Mr. Mo Project,” a non-profit that helps place elderly and sick shelter dogs into loving homes. Such wonderful people – keep up the AMAZING work!

All dogs in shelters are in need of a home and spend their days waiting to be adopted, but it can be especially hard for older dogs.

Senior dogs are less likely to get adopted than young puppies, and can spend years in the confines of shelters, wondering if they’ll have to spend their final days without ever knowing a home.

So it’s always inspiring when people rescue an older dog… but one couple took it even further, making it their mission to save as many as they can.

When couple Chris and Mariesa Hughes first met, they hit it off right away over their shared love of dogs: he had six, and she had two.

One of the most special was Moses, a 12-year-old surrendered dog Chris had recently rescued.

“He was 12 years old and surrendered for being too old,” Chris recalled to Insider. “I saw his picture and had to have him.”

Mariesa recalls that Moses became the “patriarch” of the dog pack: “he was this old soul. He seemed very wise and he would just drink you in with his eyes.”

They gave him a good home for his final years, until Moses was diagnosed with a spinal cord tumor, and the couple raised $2,400 for his MRI.

Sadly, he passed away weeks later… but his death inspired the couple to help even more senior dogs like him.

They started the Mr. Mo Project in his honor, a charity to help senior dogs and fund their medical expenses.

From the beginning, the Mr. Mo Project has worked with local shelters to fund the medical and transportation expenses of senior rescue dogs.

But as the project has grown, Chris and Mariesa have adapted their home into a full-fledged senior dog haven.

They have spent $55,000 on renovations to help more and more dogs, from a $5,000 custom dog bed to a $30,000 hydrotherapy pool.

It’s a lot of work—and this couple is doing it all on their own.

“We both work full-time jobs outside of The Mr. Mo Project,” Chris told Insider. “This is not a job, this is a labor of love. It’s where all our money goes toward.”

“We didn’t wake up one day and have 20 dogs,” Mariesa said. “If we did, that would’ve been a lot harder to figure out.

But the couple says it’s been both of their lifelong dream to help dogs, and all the hard work is worth it to help these old dogs — providing some love they likely would have never gotten.

“A lot of these dogs that come to us are probably overlooked because of the way they look,” Chris said. “They’ve got bad legs, bad teeth, crusted eyes, they’re matted. But they have so much life to live.

“They don’t let their experiences become who they are,” Mariesa added. “I think it’s so amazing of them, and I wish humans could be more like that.”

The Mr. Mo Project currently has 21 dogs in their care, but has helped over 500 so far.

What an incredible project! Thank you to this couple for giving everything to help these often-overlooked senior dogs.
