Halo, a pit bull mix, was living a happy life until suddenly she wasn’t.

Luckily, a police officer came across her photo on Facebook and said, “That’s the girl for us!”

The 6-year-old pit bull mix has been living at the Upland Borough Police Department in Upland, Pennsylvania ever since.

Prior to her current position as Police Canine Officer, Halo was living with a couple. When they broke up, they surrendered her.

Halo ended up at Rags 2 Riches Animal Rescue. She was placed with a foster family, anxiously awaiting the day she would find her forever home. It would take near one year, but it was worth the wait.

Lt. Mickey Curran with the Upland Borough Police was browsing Facebook when he came across Halo’s photo and knew she had to become a part of his department.

“She had a snaggletooth and an underbite, and I said, ‘That’s the girl for us!‘” Curran told The Philadelphia Inquirer. “I said ‘I know this is unorthodox but would you be OK with a police department rescuing a dog and with the dog living at the station?‘”

In March 2019, Halo went to her forever home, the Upland police station.

While Halo isn’t tasked with any official police business, she is in charge of providing a sense of calmness to the officers and attending community events.

“I’d never heard of a station dog but I know we’re here 24/7 and there’s a lot of dogs that don’t have homes,” Curran said. “I thought it’d be good for morale, especially when you come back from a tough situation, like a domestic violence case or a car crash, she’s there to greet you with her tail wagging. It makes the day a little easier.”

It’s been a year since Halo has accepted her duties as Upland’s Police Canine Officer, and she’s doing extremely well.

Not only has she received an outpouring of love from officers within the department, but the community has also expressed their love for the 6-year-old pit bull mix.

They regularly receive donations and treats for her, so much in fact, that they had to set up a bank account just for her.

I love a good rescue story, especially when so many people benefit.

Halo, you are a gorgeous dog, it’s hard to see why anyone would give you up, but I’m glad you found your forever family. Now, you have lots and lots of people to love you until the end of time.
