A Murray, Utah man has been arrested after police turned over a surveillance video to the Salt Lake District Attorney’s Office of the man badly beating his dog.

The Murray City Police Department got the video from the man’s apartment complex. The video shows 25-year-old Devin Jordan Spoelstra grab his dog’s snout and holding his mouth closed before pulling him off the ground by his leash.

He picks the dog up over his head and slams him to the ground. He then kneels on the dog while he punches him over and over again in his head and body.

Spoelstra told police that he slammed his dog, named Zeus, to the ground in order to gain dominance after he says Zeus wouldn’t listen to him. He also admitted to “slapping” Zeus on the face for the same reason.

The dog was rushed to the vet, where his bloodwork showed muscle and intra-abdominal trauma. He is now receiving treatment, but is expected to make a full recovery.

Spoelstra was arrested by the Murray City Police Department and now faces a third-degree animal torture felony. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Adult Detention Center on a $50,000 bail, but has since posted bond and has been released from jail.
