When families talk about possibly getting a dog, it’s often dad who is the lone holdout, saying he’ll be the one doing all the work… only to end up being the most loving toward the new pet.
It happens often enough that it’s become a popular meme online. And it was the case for one woman, who after convincing her reluctant dad to finally get a dog found him bonding with the pet in the most adorable way.
Rachael Rodrigues was thrilled to finally get a pet dog as a graduation gift from her parents: a golden retriever named Oliver.
While Rachael quickly fell in love with her new pet, her parents were more hesitant about having a dog around.
“Both my parents were very anti-dog, as we’ve always had cats and they were hesitant with the additional work (training, walking, grooming, etc.) that comes with a dog,” she told The Dodo.
However, her parents soon fell in love with the dog—especially her dad, who formed a special bond with Oliver early on.
“In the first week that we got him, we thought Oliver had a stomachache and wouldn’t sleep through the night, so Dad slept on the floor with him under a blanket and rubbed his stomach the whole night,” Rachael said.
It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship between the dad and the golden retriever. And while Oliver got better after that night, dad still continued to make sure the dog got a good night’s rest.
Rachael says that her dad loves to treat the dog like a baby, going so far as to tuck him into bed at night.
Videos on Oliver’s Instagram show dad in action. Not only does he make sure the dog is cozy in his blanket, but he kisses him goodnight!
“The video is pretty much what Dad and Oliver’s relationship is like — Dad treats him like an absolute baby (even though he won’t admit it) and Oliver laps it all up,” Rachael told The Dodo.
No one can resist a dog! It’s clear this dad has changed his mind in a big way and has made an unlikely best friend.
