It’s heartening to witness people going out of their way to help animals in need. Recently, an officer from the Ogden Police Department in Utah, demonstrated such dedication by rescuing a distressed dog in the midst of a heavy snowstorm.

According to a Facebook post from the department, Animal Service Officer A. Dickman received a call regarding a dog that sounded like it was in distress. The canine had run away from home and was stranded outside during the snowfall.

Dickman, however, went the extra mile to save the dog. Despite the harsh weather conditions, she hiked the Bonneville Shortline Trail and successfully found the dog.

The dog was distraught but was quickly scanned and reunited with its grateful owners by Dickman.

The Ogden Police Department commended Officer Dickman for her exceptional work and praised her dedication to serving the Ogden community. “Thank you, ASO Dickman, for your dedication to our Ogden Community!” the department said in a statement.

About a month ago, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) responded to a call about a dog trapped in a hot car. At the time, they suspected that the dog had been stranded in the vehicle for over two hours. After further research, the ASPCA announced that they believe the dog was actually in the car for 24 hours.

The outside temperature was in the mid-80s that day, which can reach over 100 degrees in a parked vehicle in just ten minutes. The dog would’ve perished if people hadn’t expressed concern for him. His recovery was long, but now, he has found his happily ever after.

Fighting for His Life

Several caring New Yorkers called the police when they spotted a fluffy white dog in a hot car. The car was off, and the windows were closed with the dog trapped inside, wearing a leash.

Members of the NYPD 19th Precinct gathered around the car and recorded the rescue as it was happening. One officer broke the glass on the passenger window and reached in to unlock the car. The car alarm went off for a few seconds but then stopped as the officer opened one of the back doors to get to the dog.

“Yesterday’s afternoon temps hovered in the mid 80’s & on an 85° day, it only takes 10 mins for the inside of a car to reach a deadly 102°! It’s prohibited to leave an animal unattended in a car under these dangerous conditions—thankfully the pup was rescued & is being cared for,” the NYPD 19th Precinct wrote on Twitter.

The officers brought the dog to the ASPCA Animal Recovery Center in Manhattan. He spent a month there receiving medical and behavioral treatment. Then, he was ready for adoption.

Officer Adopts Dog

The dog, who is an American Eskimo Dog now known as Snow, found his perfect family right away. Officer Aruna Maharaj with the NYPD fell in love with Snow during the rescue, so she kept in touch with the ASPCA during his recovery.

“From the moment Officer Maharaj was involved in this case, she knew Snow was special,” the ASPCA said. “She immediately brought him into her car with the air conditioner blasting, where he sat on her lap, licked her face, and wouldn’t move from her company.”

Officer Maharaj officially adopted Snow once he went through all his necessary care. Snow has adjusted well to his new family and even gets along with his new cat sibling. He loves having a large yard to run around in, and he walks to the park with his family regularly. He’s living the dream!

The NYPD hasn’t mentioned anything about Snow’s previous owner, but hopefully, they’ve been punished for leaving Snow to die in that hot car. No dog deserves to go through that.

Officer Cory Radke, a police officer in Caledonia, Wisconsin, went above and beyond the call of duty to save a dog in danger.

He and his K9 partner, Lou were heading home after their shift when a call came over the radio. There was an active house fire just minutes from their current location.

Ofc. Radke immediately responded, rushing to the address of the fire. He was the first rescue worker to arrive on the scene where he found the home’s roof engulfed in flames. Luckily the homeowners and their children were not there. However, the family’s two dogs were.

With no protective equipment, Ofc. Radke kicked in the side door to the garage and rushed into the home. He quickly located Deezel, the homeowners’ 12-year-old female Vizsla. According to a Facebook post from the Village of Caledonia Police Department, the dog was sitting on the couch “unbothered by all the commotion.”

Despite her hesitance to leave, Ofc. Radke hefted Deezel into his arms and carried her to safety. The heroic scene was captured on bodycam.

“I was just kind of like, ‘Hey, what are you doing here?’ Smoke in the room,” Radke told Fox35 of the moment he located Deezel. “‘Come on, let’s get out of here, buddy.’”

“Got a dog — I don’t know if there’s another dog,” Radke is heard saying in the body camera video.

Once Deezel was safely out of harm’s way, Ofc. Radke headed back into the home calling for the family’s other dog. It was then that he noticed flaming debris falling from the bathroom ceiling fan. The situation had become too dangerous to continue his search.

“The smoke was getting to me,” said Radke. “Had to get on out of there and let the true heroes clear it.”

While the house was severely damaged, no one was injured in the fire. Firefighters were able to locate the family’s second dog, a 12-year-old Dachshund named Norton, hiding underneath a bed.

When interviewed about his heroic actions, the officer said any dog lover would have done the same.

“It’s like, my dog, it’s part of the family,” he told Fox.

Lou did not take part in Deezel’s rescue, but he was there to offer emotional support once the action died down. The K9 officer is more than just Radke’s partner. He is also his beloved companion and lives at home with the Radke family.

It has been five years since former K9 officer, Axel settled into a life of retirement after delicately serving the Central Falls Police Department. Even though he was no longer serving the department to keep the residents of Central Falls safe and sound, Axel was still dearly loved and the entire department mourned when he passed away.

When Axel was working alongside the police officers of the department, he was so good at what he does that he retired after the usual retirement age for K9 officers. “because he just had the drive to keep going,” said a post shared on Friends of Central Falls Animals. “He did a phenomenal job at keeping the streets safe, and he always made sure our officers were safe regardless as to how dangerous a situation was. He wouldn’t have hesitated to give his life to save the life of a fellow officer, especially his partner, Officer Decristoforo.”

For Officer Decristoforo, Axel was the first K9 officer that he worked with. And after a few years of the K9 serving somewhere else, people wondered whether Axel would get used to moving to a new city and having a new partner. But he and Officer Decristoforo were “instantly best friends who were sure to have each other’s back.”

After Axel’s death, it was like Officer Decristoforo lost his “other half”. He was devastated by the loss. “They were very lucky to have each other in life, and Axel will still be watching over him,” the post added.

The Facebook post also included a message for Officer Decristoforo which said, “Axel loved you more than he loved himself! That’s just the type of dog he was. He was yours! He would have done anything for you. Now he needs you to do something for him! Stay strong and try and remember he wouldn’t want to see you upset!”

Expressing gratitude to Axel for all that the loyal canine did, the post concluded by saying, “Axel, I want to thank you for watching over us as you have! It was an honor and a privilege to not only know you but to get to work with you. You will forever be my favorite retired officer.”

Dogs are often described as man’s best friend. But every now and again, humans get to return the favor.

According to the New York Post, emergency responders were called to help when fire broke out in a New Jersey house. At first count, it initially appeared that everybody was safely out of the house. But one vigilant officer also smartly inquired if there were animals trapped inside the burning home.

“What about the dogs?” Officer Travis Sodon repeatedly asked, according to body camera footage that captured this brave rescue. Sure enough, the family owned two dogs, but the billowing smoke prevented officers from going inside to save them.

One of the dogs was cowering on the second-floor balcony, which stood approximately 15 feet off the ground, but nobody had a ladder tall enough to save him. Fortunately, Officer Sodon noticed some scaffolding leaning against the side of the house, which he topped with a lawn-chair to create a makeshift ladder.

“Quick thinking, Patrolman Sodon moved scaffolding from the side of the house to a raised second story porch in an effort to rescue a dog which was trapped on the porch,” the fire chief wrote proudly on Facebook. This rickety contraption allowed the officer to pluck the dog from his burning perch and safely delivered him to worried neighbors on the ground.

“Patrolman Sodon risked his personal safety to rescue the dog with assistance from Fire Chief Sheehan, Sergeant Phair, and the good samaritans who stopped to assist,” Chief Rossbach continued. After rescuing the frightened pup, officers were able to extinguish the fire and pull the second dog to safety.

“Patrolman Sodon is going to be presented with a meritorious service award at a later date to recognize his daring efforts,” Rossbach concluded, noting this this body camera footage is “a fine example of the extraordinary work that our first responders do on a day in and day out basis.” Thank you for saving these beautiful dogs!

It’s still the summer, and it’s important to remain aware of the danger of hot car deaths. Leaving an animal alone in a car for even a few minutes leaves them extremely susceptible to heat stroke.

Sadly, there are still many cases like this every year, and many dogs die in hot cars. But thankfully, sometimes tragedy is averted.

On August 18, Officer Sherri Howard of the Miami Township Police, in Ohio, responded to a call about a puppy left alone in a vehicle.

It was an 86 degree summer day, which means it was even hotter inside the closed vehicle.

The dog was lying on the floor unresponsive. He is believed to have been in the car for an hour.

With no owner in sight, Officer Howard had to act fast, and resorted to the only option: shattering the window to get the dog free.

The pup was relieved to finally be free from the scorching car, and happily gulped up the water the officer gave him.

According to Miami Township Police, the dog wasn’t returned to its owner, but was instead given to animal control, who are handling the case.

Luckily this dog is safe now, but it’s easy to imagine how things could’ve gone gravely different.

“NEVER leave children or animals alone in a hot car,” police wrote. “They can’t get out of the car that gets hotter and hotter by the minute.”

It’s yet another sad case of a dog being left alone in a car. It’s a crucial reminder to remain vigilant about these cases — quick action can save a dog’s life!
