In a small town in Russia, an elderly woman lived by herself. One day, a group of hunters knocked on her door seeking refuge. The hunters had three puppies with them that they left on the woman’s porch before entering her home.

The woman welcomed the hunters and offered them a meal and a place to stay for the night. The following morning, the hunters left with two of the puppies, leaving the weakest one behind on the woman’s front porch. The woman decided to keep the puppy and named him Volchok.

Volchok grew up under the woman’s care, and he was incredibly loyal to her. However, when a group of dangerous men prowled the town, the woman became frightened, especially when they singled her out and headed towards her home.

A man enjoying his daily stroll behind his house heard desperate cries for help. After investigating, he found nothing and no one, but he remained perplexed by the unusual situation. The man decided to continue walking down the beach to see what was happening.

As the man got closer to the shore, he saw a tiny creature that was so fragile, it broke his heart. This baby otter, who should have been swimming with her family, was sitting in a pile of tears crying for her mother. The aquarium employee knew he had to try to reunite the otter with her family.

The employee carefully picked up the baby otter and walked with her up and down the beach, hoping her cries would lure her mother out. However, there was no other otter around, likely due to the large swells brought in by the weather. The otter was probably separated from her mom for good. The man had no other choice but to bring the baby otter to the aquarium.

Happy endings are not always easy to come by for special needs otters. As the stories show, the Monterey Bay Aquarium rescued a traumatized baby pup. Now, her fearlessness is inspiring other young otters, and the Shedd Aquarium helped facilitate her transition to her new home.

The day before this baby otter was transferred to the Shedd Aquarium, she had the pleasure of receiving care at Monterey Bay. The humans there knew it would be crucial for her to adapt to various otter activities, so the pup learned about solid foods and swimming in water below her belly.

The pup became more and more playful and even tolerated being brushed and towel-dried. Before long, it was time for her to journey over to Shedd Aquarium. She probably had no idea how much she would be missed. Some of her new human friends even cried as they said goodbye.

A baby otter has successfully made her way to her new home. Just wait until you see what happens next when she meets her new caregivers. Will you look at that face of hers?

The world lost one of its most beloved conservationists and TV personalities in 2006, after Steve Irwin, the iconic star of The Crocodile Hunter, was tragically killed by a stingray.

But his legacy has lived on, both through the fans who grew up watching his wildlife series, and his family, who has kept up his important conservation work at the Australia Zoo, working to protect native wildlife.

And now every year, the legend is honored with his own holiday: Steve Irwin Day, held every November 15.

The day is described as “an international and annual event to celebrate the extraordinary life of the one and only Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin.” It includes a day of events at the Australia Zoo honoring Steve’s life and legacy, while aiming to raise money for Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors’ conservation and preservation work.

In honor of this special occasion, both of Steve’s children took the opportunity to share heartwarming tributes on social media to their late “Wildlife Warrior” dad.

Robert Irwin, Steve’s 18-year-old son who has been noted for his resemblance to his famous dad, shared a throwback pic on Instagram of himself as a toddler, holding a baby alligator with his dad.

He called Steve Irwin Day “a day to remember everything Dad was about – conservation, dedication, fun and family.”

“It never ceases to amaze me what an impact Dad had on the world when I see people in every corner of the globe celebrating his life and legacy on this special day,” Robert wrote.

Robert’s sister Bindi, who has followed in her dad’s footsteps as one of the most famous conservationists and animal heroes in the world, also paid tribute.

She shared a video of Steve Irwin speaking about how he wanted to be remembered, and what legacy he would leave behind:

“If there’s one thing that I, Steve Irwin, would want to be remembered for, passion and enthusiasm. conservation is my job, my whole persona, my life revolves around that and so do my friends, family, colleagues everyone I know is involved in conservation. And you know I get this overwhelming feeling that I’m sharing my wildlife encounters with you. What a beautiful thing.”

It’s moving footage to watch today: Steve died 16 years ago, and he’d be so happy to know that all these years later people still remembered his life and work so fondly, and dedicate a day every year in his memory.

Bindi urged her millions of followers to celebrate the holiday by wearing “your best khaki and celebrating the greatest Wildlife Warrior the world has ever known.”

In addition to carrying on her father’s legacy, doing important work for animals around the world, Bindi has also been busy raising her baby daughter Grace.

She said she is raising her daughter to have an appreciation and love for animals and nature, and young Grace is already taking after her grandpa.

“This sweetheart lights up seeing her ‘Grandpa Crocodile’ on screen,” Bindi wrote on the 15th anniversary of Steve’s passing.

“I wish that Dad could hug my beautiful girl… I hold on to the thought that he’s her guardian angel now, watching over the most special part of my life, Grace.”

And the youngest Irwin seems to be following in her family footsteps already: Grace has a way with animals. Terri Irwin, Bindi’s mom and Steve’s widow, says animals “gravitate” to her granddaughter when they’re at the Australia Zoo.

“I think she’s got that determination that Steve had and that connection with wildlife,” Terri told Entertainment Tonight. “So she’ll go out in the morning in the stroller, and all the kangaroos just gather around her like they’re having a meeting.”

We all miss the late great Steve Irwin, but it’s clear that his legacy has lived on in a huge way, and it’s also clear he made a big impression on his kids.

Although all newborn baby animals are gorgeous, the birth of a baby giraffe is particularly noteworthy. Unlike other babies, giraffes may reach heights of over six feet at birth and are able to stand up without any assistance.

Because of this, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado is thrilled to welcome a young female giraffe that was born on Wednesday morning.

The announcement follows a 15-month pregnancy by 10-year-old mom Bailey. According to a post from the zoo, a “group of lucky guests” saw Bailey’s water break as she went into labor.

“Tens of thousands” also witnessed the baby’s birth live via a YouTube livestream set up by the zoo.

Giraffes have one of the most unique births in the animal kingdom: Giraffes have the third-largest newborns in the animal kingdom, behind only blue whales and elephants, averaging about 165 pounds.

After the long gestation period, baby giraffes enter the world already pretty fully-formed, and start taking their first wobbly steps within an hour of birth.

That was the case for this newborn, the zoo writes, who took “several attempts to stand on its own” before finding her footing.

The calf is currently unnamed: in accordance with “Cheyenne Mountain Zoo tradition,” they will wait 30 days before giving her a name.

They don’t have an exact weight and height yet, but she appears to be 6 feet tall and about 125 pounds.

She is the second baby for mom Bailey, and is now the 17th member of the zoo’s reticulated giraffe herd. Her father is a male giraffe named Khalid.

The mom and baby have been bonding well, and zoo visitors can see them from a short distance in the giraffe barn. They can also be seen on the zoo’s livestream.

Reticulated giraffes were listed as an endangered species on the IUCN Red List as of 2018, so every new birth is great news for the conservation of this endangered species.

We hope this beautiful little giraffe continues to thrive and grow up big, strong and very tall! Congrats to mama Bailey on her second birth!

The post Zoo celebrates birth of precious newborn reticulated giraffe appeared first on G2a-ltc.

There’s no use crying over spilled milk, as the old saying goes — and the same goes for spilled watermelons. That was the case recently, after one produce mishap led to a sweet opportunity for some thirsty animals.

According to People, a truck was carrying over 100 watermelons and cantaloupes from Yak’s Produce to the Louisiana Watermelon Festival in Farmerville.

But unfortunately, the truck was in an accident that left the melons all over the road.

The melons were crushed and bruised, and obviously couldn’t be sold to customers. In most cases, they would’ve been scooped up and thrown away — but in this case, one woman stepped up with a different idea.

Leslie Greene is a Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator who runs a nonprofit rescue on her property. She has 42 animals, like beavers, skunks and raccoons — all animals who are happy to eat a watermelon, even if it has been crushed.

She reached out to Yak’s for permission, and the owner was happy to let her take the produce, saying it was “wonderful” that the fruit wouldn’t have to be discarded after all.

Leslie fed the watermelons to her animals, who happily ate them up, enjoying them as a perfect summertime treat.

“They absolutely love it,” Leslie told People. “With it being so hot and humid, it’s the perfect snack.”

“Watermelon is 92% water,” she explained on TikTok. “It’s a great way to keep the wildlife hydrated in this summertime heat! It’s also packed full of nutrients including vitamins A & C.”

Not only is it healthy, the animals love it. One video shows a beaver happily chowing down on a piece of watermelon.

Leslie thanked Yak’s Produce for donating the melons to her instead of throwing it away. After her story went viral with half a million views on TikTok, she says many people reached out to the company to thank them.

And according to People, Yak’s offered to give Leslie any of the produce they could no longer sell.

“It turned out to be a big win for us and the wildlife,” Leslie said. “I appreciate Yak’s and appreciate all the animal lovers who did reach out to Yak’s and tell them thank you.”

What a sweet story. It’s great to see people making the most out of a bad situation, especially when it means rescued animals get a tasty treat.

A local shelter director is a hero for preventing a flood from harming an Alabama dog, who is now safe.

A severe storm that hit Dothan, Alabama, on March 18 immediately overwhelmed nearby creeks and submerged several yards and low-lying areas in hip-deep water.

After the rain stopped, someone called the Dothan Police Department and reported a dog that was chained and having trouble breathing, according to a Facebook post from the department.

Director of the Dothan Animal Shelter Bill Banks rushed to the call but was unable to reach the dog’s owner. Unaware of what might be lying beneath the water’s surface or how friendly the terrified canine would be to outsiders, Banks stepped into the murky water.

“Once I got down there, it wasn’t but a minute or two before I had her free,” Banks said. “The water was waist-deep, chest-deep in some places. I got totally destroyed by fire ants,” he says. “They were all over the surface of the water. They were all over my shirt, my arms. The dog was covered in them.”

When faced with an animal in need, Banks bravely broke through the fence and liberated the struggling dog, who gratefully gave him a wet, sloppy hug that was documented in a photograph.

The Dothan Police Department lavishly praised the director in the article.

“Director Banks’ selflessness and care for animals reflects greatly on himself, the Dothan Animal Shelter, and the city of Dothan,” the post reads.

For his part, Banks is eager to clarify that the incident was an accident and that the dog’s owner is not at fault.

“In all the years I’ve been here, that creek has never come up that far before,”; he says. “I got ahold of the owner at the time, but he was in the next state, taking care of some business, and was headed back when I talked to him. I think he got home about half an hour after I pulled [the dog] out.”

Banks says he tied the dog up closer to the home and that the grateful owner has already relocated the dog house and enclosure further up the property to prevent a similar situation from happening again.

Many of us have gotten in line early for something we really want, hoping to beat the crowds and be one of the first: nabbing concert tickets or a newly-released phone, for instance.

But wouldn’t it be nice if people were that eager to adopt pets? Imagine a world where people line up outside before shelters even open just for a chance to adopt the dog of their dreams.

Well that’s what happened at one shelter recently, as one man lined up early to make sure a beautiful shelter puppy would be his.

Elliot, a border collie puppy, ended up at Palm Springs Animal Shelter in March after being found as a stray, according to The Dodo.

The scared, shy dog was put in a foster home until he could be put up for adoption — and there, he made a big impression on the foster’s neighbor, Dr. Brian Eberhart.

“He had the opportunity to get to know Elliot before he was available and fell in love,” Anthony Mercurio of the shelter told Newsweek.

So when Elliot was put up for adoption, Dr. Eberhart knew he had to be the one to give the pup a home — and he made extra sure no one else would claim the dog before him.

On the day Elliot was up for adoption, the shelter didn’t open til 1 pm — but he waited outside for five hours before the opening, ensuring that he’d be the first.

“He was there from around 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. when we opened. We saw his lounge setup outside and just had to talk to him and found out he was there to ensure he had a chance to adopt Elliot,” Mercurio told Newsweek.

Dr. Eberhart camped outside, relaxing in a folding chair with a book. “His wife later relieved him for a bathroom break just before noon. It was a team effort,” Mercurio said.

He was certainly more dedicated than most people are when it comes to adopting a dog. “Other people came by that morning as well, but once they found out that we didn’t open until 1 p.m. that day, they gave up and left,” Mercurio told The Dodo.

Thankfully, his patience paid off, and Eberhart indeed had the first chance to adopt Elliot. If his camping outside wasn’t enough to prove that he was the perfect owner for the pup, Elliot’s reaction certainly was.

“Elliot acted like he was being reunited with an old friend and it was obvious to us that there was a match there!” Mercurio said.

Dr. Eberhart went home with Elliot that day, and gave him a new name, “Leo.” According to The Dodo, it stands for “Love Each Other.”

After the heartwarming moment went viral, Eberhart set up his own TikTok account to show his adventures with Leo.

Videos show that the man and dog are very happy together, and can often be found relaxing together around the house.

“Life is good together,” Eberhart wrote.

What a sweet story. It’s clear that this man truly loves his new puppy, and we know they will be devoted to each other forever.

All dogs hold a special place in the hearts of their owners, but a 6-year-old German Shepherd named Sadie is one of those extra special dogs who make international headlines. The heroic dog did something for her owner that saved his life recently. When the man (named Brian) collapsed in his New Jersey home after suffering a stroke, Sadie did something completely and utterly extraordinary.

Not only did she stay right by his side, but Sadie licked her owner’s face to keep him awake, dragged him across the room to his cellphone, and waited by his side while Brian called for help. Ironically, Sadie came into Brian’s life just a few months earlier. She was surrendered to the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge when her previous owner moved. She was confused and seemingly “lost” at the shelter since she lost the only family she ever knew and loved.

According to the refuge, “Sadie is a loyal dog, but nervous and protective with new people, making her a more difficult placement. Just a few months ago, Brian came into Sadie’s life and decided to adopt her. Though her bio noted that she was especially nervous with men, Brian felt a special bond with Sadie, as he valued her intelligence, hesitancy to trust and fierce loyalty once she did form that trust.”

Judge Michael Cicconetti, from Painsville, Ohio, is an animal lover who has become well known for the creative sentences he hands out to animal abusers. He has found that a taste of their own medicine is just what they need.

His love for animals started when he was a young boy, with a sweet dachshund mix named Herman. That dog was his best friend and the beginning of a lifetime love for dogs. Now he enjoys the company of his Bernese mountain dog, Kasey.

Early on in his career, Judge Mike noticed that there were a lot of animal abuse and neglect cases with repeat offenders. Initially, he sentenced them to jail time and a fine, but that did not seem to solve the problem. So he came up with a sentence that fit the crime.

Judge Mike has to stay within the parameters of the law, but feels that a little discomfort and embarrassment will teach animal abusers a just and fair lesson. He feels that there needs to be more education on animal care, and a course needs to be a requirement for anyone who abuses or neglects animals, similar to how drunk drivers often have to take a course.

According to I Heart Dogs, Judge Mike sentenced a woman who had her emaciated dog living in filthy conditions to spend an entire day in the dump. “I want you to go down to the county dump, to the landfill, and I want them to find the stinkiest, smelliest, God-awful odor place they can find in that dump, and I want you to sit there for eight hours tomorrow, to think about what you did to that dog while you smell the odor. If you puke, you puke,” he stated at the hearing.

It may be an awful sentence, but it certainly fits the crime. We still can’t believe anyone would do something so cruel to innocent animals.

One woman who dumped 35 kittens in the woods was sentenced to spend a night in the woods, along with jail time and a fine. Judge Mike stated, “How would you like to be dumped off at a metro park late at night, spend the night listening to the coyotes…listening to the raccoons around you in the dark night, and sit out there in the cold not knowing where you’re going to get your next meal, not knowing when you are going to be rescued?”

Judge Mike comes up with the unique sentences once he hears the entire case. He has been known to apply this method to other offenders of the law with great success. He claims it works, and he will continue with his unusual sentences. His repeat offenders are 10%, whereas the national average is 75%.

He rules with a creative spin that he hopes will have people thinking twice before breaking the law. In Ohio, abusing a companion animal is a felony. Judge Mike would like to see a registry of animal abusers made public. If you see someone abusing or neglecting an animal, call the police.

While it’s not uncommon to see kids get very attached to a certain stuffed animal of theirs and refuse to go anywhere without them, the same isn’t always said about our pets. But they too, can get very attached to their stuffed animals and refuse to do anything without them. That is the case with 1-year-old Barley, a Golden Retriever living in Amsterdam. He refuses to go anywhere without his stuffed dog Fluffy.

Barley’s owner, Zita Butler, bought the stuffed toy for Barley when they first adopted him as a sort of welcome to your new home gift.

At the time, Butler hoped that the toy would help Barley settle in and that he’d like it – but she wasn’t prepared for just how much Barley would take to Fluffy. He refuses to do anything – be it walking around the house or hanging outside – without taking Fluffy in his mouth.

Barley and Fluffy are an inseparable pair at this point – so much so that neighbors in the neighborhood recognize and love the iconic duo, snapping pictures of them on their walks.

Fluffy even looks like Barley, so it almost as if Barley is carrying around his own mini-me.

Besides being a very sweet and affectionate dog, Butler describes Barley as an “attention seeker,” “a bit goofy,” and a “real explorer.”
