There are thousands of dogs all over the world simply waiting to be adopted, living insecure lives without knowing what tomorrow will bring.

That’s why the heroes that work to give them a second chance in life deserve to be praised and celebrated.

89-year-old Maisie Green is certainly one of them. She developed a soft spot in her heart for dogs who had no one and nothing else – those living in shelters – and decided she had to act upon it to improve a great many lives.

To that end, she began to knit blankets … a whole lot of them.

89-year-old Maisie Green truly has a heart of gold. A genuine animal lover, she spends her free time working on things to improve the lives of dogs living in shelters.

When Maisie was concocting ways in which she could make a difference, she turned to one of her other passions in life: knitting. Why not combine the two? she thought.

It was as good as done. To date, Maisie has knitted in excess of 450 blankets for dogs in need!

“I love knitting and I love dogs, so this combines both wonderfully! It takes me three days to knit a blanket and one day to knit a doggy coat. It keeps me busy and often, I like to knit whilst watching television. I’m delighted to be helping the four-legged residents at the center in some way,” the 89-year-old said, as per Bored Panda.

For Maisie, knitting is both a source of enjoyment and a way of working towards an end goal.

“It keeps me working, and I usually knit while watching TV,” she explained.

Maisie’s fantastic efforts have been of tremendous help to the shelters, not least to the dogs themselves, who now never have to worry about being cold.

“I’m delighted to be helping the four-legged residents at the center in some way,” she continued.

The scheme really has proven to be a success! Just look how cozy these dogs are.

The Rehoming Centre Manager at Dogs Trust Basildon said: “Maisie regularly brings along her knitted donations and we are so grateful for her support. With the chill of the winter months really starting to creep up on us, I know our dogs are very pleased to put the items to good use – and love feeling extra cosy!”

Maisie really is an animal hero! Just think of how many hours she’s committed to helping animals in need.

Our dogs know us better than anyone else. They spend so much time by our sides that they know in a heartbeat when something is wrong. In some cases, a dog’s quick thinking has saved the lives of their humans.

Sandy the rescue dog is one of many pups who can think quickly under pressure. Gwendola Johnson, Sandy’s 88-year-old mom, fell outside her home and struggled to get up. Without Sandy, she might’ve never gotten the help she needed.

Sandy’s Quick Thinking

Kirk White with Glendale Integrated Waste Management always visited Johnson’s home during his trash collection route. He was used to seeing Sandy watch him from the window, so when Sandy came running outside, White knew something was wrong.

Johnson’s home was on top of a steep incline. So, she could see White from where she was, but he couldn’t see her. She struggled to call to him, but he couldn’t hear her. So, she turned to Sandy and instructed the pup to go get help. Sure enough, Sandy knew exactly what to do.

Sandy ran down to White and tried to get his attention. Luckily, White knew it was unusual for the dog to be outside on his own, so he followed him back to the house. Right away, he saw Johnson on the ground. She had been waiting there for about an hour.

“She was on the floor, unable to get up,” said White. “I know it was very hot that Friday… seeing someone in the sun, that wasn’t right at all.”

White helped Johnson back onto her feet. He also checked to make sure she had no injuries, and luckily, she looked healthy.

Doing What’s Right

Sandy saved his human’s life, but he wasn’t the only hero that day. White was aware enough to know that something was wrong and he could tell that Sandy was alerting him of something. Not everyone would’ve been able to pick up on those minor changes. Cheryl Malvar, Johnson’s granddaughter, said she’s amazed at how well White handled the situation.

“[He] actually made an effort. Not everybody does,” said Malvar. “He investigated and he was aware enough to know it was off. We love him. He’ll always have friends here.”

However, White admitted that he was just doing what any kind human would’ve done.

“Just helping another human, that’s what we’re supposed to do,” said White. “After this, I was thinking I want a dog like Sandy. We can learn something from animals.”

His words couldn’t be more true. All humans should do the right thing, but that’s not always what happens. With dogs though, they’re loyal to you no matter what. Johnson had opened her heart to Sandy when she adopted him, so he knew he had to rescue her in return. A little kindness can go a long way, whether it’s from a human or a furry friend.

Dogs are such incredible animals, and their amazing senses can be used to do so much good. They’re especially valuable to police departments: when it comes to finding missing people, no one gets the job done like a K9 dog.

It’s especially important when the lost person is at risk and in danger. Luckily, one dog was able to save the day before it was too late.

In 2019, a 90-year-old woman named Loudell Hubbard, from Birmingham, Alabama, went missing. She was suffering from dementia.

Everyone feared for Loudell’s life. Family and neighbors were terrified what would happen if she wasn’t found soon.

But the Birmingham Police Department put one of their most capable officers on the case: a dog named Saby.

With K9 Unit officers Richard Wright and Dustin Brock, Saby led the search through the woods, keeping his nose to the ground and looking for her scent.

Miraculously, Saby soon followed the scent and found Loudell.

“The same time Richard came around the corner Saby was pulling me towards the creek. I come around and she was laying in the creek,” Brock recalled to WBMA.

“I yelled ‘Ma’am can you hear me?’ She raised her head up and then we just went to her,” Wright added.

Loudell had walked into the woods without her cane, and made it about a mile and a half before falling into a creek. She fell asleep resting her head on her purse, waiting for someone to rescue her.

Everyone was thrilled to see Loudell returned safe and sound.

“Joy. It was joy. Everybody was just elated,” neighbor Frederick Jones told WBMA. “Everybody was thanking God and just elated. Really it brought tears to your eyes that she was ok.”

And it’s all thanks to Saby for saving the day.

“It’s impossible for us to duplicate what he does and do his job as fast as he does,” Officer Brock said.

Bless Saby for saving this woman before it was too late! It shows the amazing things K9 officers can do.
