It’s unbelievable how some people can heartlessly abandon their dogs, tossing them away to fend for themselves, leaving the dogs confused to why their family suddenly isn’t there to take care of them.

But one recent case is especially heartbreaking: a family moved away and for some reason decided to leave their dog behind, who was left helplessly waiting in vain for their return.

The poor dog was spotted wandering around his neighborhood in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, but always returned to his familiar porch, as if still loyal to his old family and oblivious to the fact that they’d never return to him.

Neighbors caught on to the situation and contacted Speranza Animal Shelter. The shelter’s founder, Janine Guido, showed up to take in the dog, and found him scrounging for scraps of food in a dumpster.

When she tried to approach and feed the dog, he retreated… and pawed at the old door, still expecting someone to let him inside.

Janine was heartbroken by the sight, but resolved to gain the dog’s trust. She returned with more food, and was able to get the dog to trust her by speaking in a reassuring voice, telling him that things would be okay now.

“It sounds dumb but I swear he knew what I was saying to him,” she told The Dodo. “He literally came over and sat down and allowed me to leash him.”

She cried as she drove the dog to the shelter, but the dog now seemed calm, as if he knew he was in good hands.

“I’m so sorry you were let down,” the shelter wrote on Facebook. “But I hope you realize we are here to help. And you will never be left alone again.”

The dog settled in to his new life in the shelter’s care. They named him Cupid, fittingly as he was found so close to Valentine’s Day.

“He has been nothing but the sweetest gentleman since coming to the rescue,” Janine told The Dodo. “You can tell he’s still really confused. But he is happy to meet everyone with a wagging tail.”

Of course the shelter is hoping to find Cupid a good home, but they are caring for his health first. Cupid is 45-50 pounds, and was found with hair loss and some scarring.

He will need to see a vet and be neutered before he’s put up for adoption.

But luckily, it looks like this poor dog will have no problem finding a home once he’s ready. He’s already received over 50 adoption applications. You can fill one out on their website if you are interested in adopting Cupid (or any of the other dogs in need in their care.)

“I don’t think that will be hard to find because he truly is the sweetest guy,” Janine said.

Cupid’s heartbreaking story shows how endlessly loyal dogs can be… even to owners who don’t return that loyalty.

A couple of Good Samaritans found Calvin, a Pit Bull mix, wandering the streets with a severe leg injury. The poor pup is believed to have been used as a bait dog by dog fighters, which means he was used to testing the tenacity and aggression of larger, stronger dogs. It was clear these abusers did not care if Calvin lived or died. The couple that took him in wanted to seek veterinary care to save him but were quickly overwhelmed with the cost – estimated to be over $10,000.

That’s when they started a GoFundMe (Warning: very graphic images on the GoFundMe page) page and relinquished him to Corinne Manley, a veterinary technician at Blue Pearl Specialty and Emergency Pet Hospital in Spring, Texas. Manley says it’s clear that Calvin has found a permanent home with her. The GoFundMe page has significantly exceeded the budget needed to cover the medical costs, with generous people everywhere chipping in to help.

According to Manley on the page, “He was found with very extensive wounds on his entire body, but most notably on his rear legs. He is requiring significant wound care and also has a chronic Achilles tendon laceration that is not reparable. This will require fusion of his right tibial tarsal joint (ankle joint) and if not successful, the amputation of his right rear leg. He is heartworm positive and will require heartworm treatment. He is the sweetest boy and just wants to be loved and held.”

So what will happen with the money that goes above and beyond the cost of Calvin’s treatment? Manley states, “With any money left over, we also want to help dogs like Calvin and who share similar story’s. Dogfighting is a crime and people who participate should be punished. Calvin is lucky that he survived and we want many other dogs to have similar success stories until we can find a way to stop this tragedy. Funds will be withdrawn and put into a savings account for Calvin until he is completely cared for. Any leftover will be kept in Calvin’s saving account for others who share his story.”

Thankfully, Calvin has found a loving forever home that will make sure he recovers to the best of his ability. Regardless of how many legs he ends up keeping, we know he’ll be loved and cherished for the rest of his life – just what he deserves.

“I think he’s going to be stuck with me,” Manley said.

Dogfighting is a terrible activity that needs to be stopped and we’re grateful that Calvin was able to escape with his life.

When Lisa Reilly adopted her beloved pooch Meatball she knew she’d finally found her perfect match. That is exactly how she described the feeling when she first saw Meaty’s smiling face in a picture uploaded to the Fresno Bully Shelter’s Facebook page. Lisa was moved by the fact that he bore a striking resemblance to her previous dog, Kitty, who had passed away only three months before she adopted him. She made the decision to bring him home with her and give him the forever home that he so desperately needed.

After adoption, Lisa quickly learned that her new pooch had a secret love affair with the camera. The playful pup was only too happy to constantly pose for photos. As a result, Lisa started an Instagram for the pooch and he quickly ended up with lots of fans. His followers totaled well over 150k!

Things were definitely taking a wonderful turn for both the woman and her new dog. In fact, close to the time that Meatball joined her household, Lisa also met her future husband, Joe. He and Meaty quickly formed a close bond as well, and it wasn’t long before the three of them had formed a happy family. Lisa and Joe often dressed Meaty up in silly outfits for his Instagram.

However, Joe and Meatball did work on one secret project together. Joe had taught Meaty how to balance a very important diamond ring on his nose. Then, Joe dressed him up in an adorable tuxedo in order to pop the question to Lisa. She said yes, and it wasn’t long until they were married and living happily ever after with Meaty and their four other rescue dogs.

Dogs are some of the most amazing animals on the planet. One of the best things about them is how readily they form bonds with people. Not just their owners, but people outside their families, too. These bonds can be just as heartfelt and unbreakable as any other, a fact many UPS drivers can tell you.

Being a driver for UPS means you’re going to be stopping by a lot of the same houses day in and day out.

As one would expect, that also means you’ll be encountering a lot of loveable dogs on your daily route. Many UPS drivers have developed a tight bond with some of the pups they meet while working. A lot of the times they will even pack along treats and toys to pass out to pups on their routes.

In fact, so many drivers have developed bonds with these dogs that they’ve even created their very own Facebook page to feature them, called UPS Dogs.

Katie Newhouser is one such UPS driver, and she loves to spoil all the dogs on her route.

There was one dog, though, in particular, that she formed quite a bond with. His name is Leo.

Over the course of time, Katie also became attached to Leo’s owner, Tina.

Leo’s mom told the UPS driver the story of how her and Leo came to be. She said that her son brought him to her when he was still very young. He had found the pup almost too tiny to survive, and so Tina bottle-fed the small pup back to health. Thinking of Tina as his real ‘mom’, Leo and Tina bonded to each other immediately. There wasn’t a single thing Tina did without her devoted dog Leo right there with her.

“They were very very close and did everything together. I don’t think that dogs ever forget anyone who they have been that close to,” explains the UPS driver in an interview with PEOPLE.

Tina and Katie had formed a fast friendship, and it was always a joy to see Leo on her delivery route. Then, one day in July of 2017, tragedy struck.

As Katie was scrolling through Facebook, she came across a post that broke her heart. Her friend Tina had suddenly passed away.

The UPS driver was devastated by the news, but she also found herself worrying over what would happen to poor Leo. She reached out to Tina’s son, Cannon, to see what would become of her faithful, furry friend. Unfortunately, though, Cannon was still an active duty Marine at the time. Due to circumstances, he wouldn’t be able to keep Leo with him.

That’s when Katie decided to take Leo on herself, unable to bear the thought of him going to a stranger. Thrilled with the idea of spending every day with the pup, she shared the good news in a post on UPS dogs’ Facebook page.

“This is Leo …. he would always start barking as I pulled into the condo complex……He would always jump into my truck when I stopped…. his owner passed away and now he lives with me,” wrote Katie in her caption.

As it turned out, this wouldn’t be Katie’s first furbaby. In fact, the UPS driver was already mom to three other dogs.

She was a little anxious about how the dynamic might change by adding a fourth, but it turns out she had no reason to worry. Things changed, but for the better. Leo loved his new siblings!

“It was probably confusing for him at first, [but] he has adapted well. He and his brother Moose are inseparable. Bailey, his sister, has taken a while to come around, [but] they actually play now … once Leo was introduced into the house, the whole vibe changed,” she explains.

While there is no question Leo was adored by his new family and that he would fit in just fine, he was still working through his mom’s death. It was obvious to Katie that her fur buddy missed Tina fiercely.

“Leo missed Tina when he first got here. He would whine at night before he would fall asleep. It was heartbreaking, really. He still does every once in a while. I know he misses her,” Katie says.

While we are sure Leo will miss his mama for a long time to come, we are happy to know he is in a safe place with a loving family to help get him through it.

Leo is an amazing pitbull with an enormous smile and an even bigger heart, which is just the perfect size to match Katie’s. If you want to know more about their story, watch the video below.

Pit Bulls know how to care for others, unlike any other dog. Despite their bad reputation, they are often the most loving and considerate dogs out there. This became even more clear when a Pit Bull and squirrel friendship soon became popular on Reddit and Instagram.

Everly is a rescue Pit Bull with such a kind heart. Her mom, Morgan Joy Groves, says that the sweet dog befriends nearly everyone, even other animals. Recently, a baby squirrel started hanging out near Everly, and the gentle Pit Bull claimed the tiny animal as her own child.

A Beautiful Friendship

Groves was just taking Everly for her regular walk when they crossed paths with the baby squirrel. The poor little guy was all alone. His mother didn’t seem to be nearby, and he had an unusual fascination with Everly. So, the squirrel followed Everly home, where they quickly became best friends.

After a tiring walk, Everly first laid down to rest for a bit. To her surprise, the little squirrel climbed on top of her and fell asleep with her. It was the start of a beautiful friendship. Of course, her cat sister was skeptical at first, but it was clear that Everly and the squirrel were happy.

“Everly has such a special talent of always being able to make new friends,” Groves commented on Instagram

Everly and the squirrel’s favorite activity was napping together. The sweet Pit Bull always rested right beside her squirrel friend, and she often sniffed him and groomed him to make sure he was safe and healthy. During their time with the squirrel, Groves posted some adorable photos of the two on Instagram.

Where is the Squirrel Now?

As adorable as their unlikely friendship is, the squirrel is still a wild animal. Many Reddit users came forward to explain that caring for a squirrel is much trickier than you’d expect. Unfortunately, there are a lot of risks involved. So, multiple people commented to share some squirrel care advice with Groves

With all the information she learned about baby squirrels, Groves decided that her home was not the best place for a squirrel to grow up. Taking Everly’s new friend away was heartbreaking, but she knew it was for the best. She wanted an expert to help the squirrel stay healthy.

“Our little squirrel friend was brought to a wildlife center where it will be nourished and taken care of,” Groves posted on Instagram. “There are two other squirrels his age that he will grow up with, and when ready, be released back into the forest together as a family!”

Everly did a great job keeping the baby squirrel company. In that squirrel’s mind, the loving Pit Bull will always be like a mother to him. How would you react if a group of thugs suddenly approached you and unlawfully demanded you to surrender your car keys?

Do you say no and risk being beaten or worse? Or, do you hand them over and pray that’s enough to just make them go away?

Well, one man recently encountered this situation but, fortunately for him, he didn’t have much say in what happened after.

But his Pitbull pups sure did.

Ellabelle and Ladybug are two adorable Pitbull dogs who were disowned and dumped by their previous owners.

Life wasn’t always that smooth for the two pitties but that didn’t stop them from hoping that, one day, they would receive love from a human.

Their wait was over when they were adopted by Robert McGowan, their new foster dad.

According to him, both dogs are of a composed and calm nature.

“They’re very docile and timid. They’re not aggressive at all,” McGowan told The Dodo.
Both Ellabelle and Ladybug showed nothing but love to their new dad.

Even though he knows how much his rescue girls love him, though, he never had the slightest idea of just how far they were willing to go to protect him… until someone tried to hurt him.

One evening, McGowan was in his garage seated comfortably next to his car with the garage door up. While his guard was down, the unexpected happened.

Four men suddenly rushed inside and began assaulting him.

He was caught off-guard, outnumbered, and overpowered by the intruders.

“One just punched me straight in the eye,” McGowan said. “I was knocked off my chair.”
Their target became obvious when the assailants demanded him to hand over the keys to his car. Injured and still shocked by the series of events, McGowan told them that the car keys were inside his house.

Little did they know, so were his beloved Pitbulls.

When one of the intruders opened the door into the home, Ellabelle and Ladybug were ready to greet them. And it was payback time!

“They chased them out,” McGowan said. “My girls ran into the garage and stood over me. They stood there barking, making it clear that no one was going to hurt me anymore. The four people took off.”
Ellabelle and Ladybug taught the thugs a lesson. Their daddy was NOT to be messed with. The pitties also definitely saved their dad’s car from being stolen.

McGowan only suffered a left black eye from the would-be thieves.

Thanks to his ladies’ bravery, his car wasn’t stolen and he only needed to heal a minor injury.

Ellabelle and Ladybug ended up being spoiled by dad with lots of treats. Of course, it’s the least that he can do to reward his hero Pitbull pups for saving him.

“They got toys and treats. They got good stuff,” McGowan said.
McGowan knows for a fact that his love for his furry little ladies is no match to what they did to save not only his car but, most importantly, his life.

He just hopes that his story gets to reach more people to raise awareness and, hopefully, encourage more kind-hearted people to open up their homes to shelter dogs who need a forever family.

He’s sure many dogs would show the same bravery for their beloved owners.

“They are rescues. Unwanted dogs. They saved my life,” he wrote. “Please consider adopting a rescue. They might save your life too.”

In fact, besides working hard on the job, Kiah and Officer Bruzgul make it their mission to educate others on the reality of the breed. Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes are the #1 breeds in shelters. If more people are made aware of their true potential and who these dogs really are, it can place thousands (upon thousands) of dogs in forever homes.

The K9 duo has also proved that Pit Bulls are qualified to serve. So, instead of spending, on average, $20,000 for a police dog, police departments can turn to shelters where plenty of qualified dogs sit and wait. Many dogs that are euthanized due to overcrowding can find a new purpose. Isn’t that something to smile about?

When dogs are found starving, homeless, and cowering in fear, rescuers need great patience and a gentle touch. Two women from the rescue group Hope for Paws in Los Angeles rose to the challenge to save the life of a scared, malnourished Pit Bull that was too weak to walk, even to get food. They named the dog Tarzan and the story of his rescue will break your heart.

Tarzan must have had some very scary encounters with humans. He was so afraid that he hid inside thick brush alongside a Los Angeles freeway. People noticed him there but he only hid himself further. He wanted nothing to do with people who could cause him further harm. It was clear that Tarzan was hungry and weak but he couldn’t be coaxed to come out, even for food.

Hope for Paws Called in to Rescue Tarzan

One good samaritan decided to enlist the help of a local rescue group, Hope for Paws. He called them up and two women from the group came to the scene to see if they could save Tarzan. The women spent hours patiently and quietly sitting near Tarzan, offering him small bits of food. The poor Pittie was so weak that he could not move to the food. They knew just what to do, moving the food to him instead.

Over time, Tarzan was able to eat. Slowly but surely, the food helped him regain the strength he needed to come closer to safety. The rescuers pet his head and spoke softly to him, trying to convince him that they could be trusted. Tarzan was finally convinced that his rescuers were there to help and he crawled out of his hiding spot.

The Pit Bull Was Too Weak to Walk, So the Two Women Carried Him

Once Tarzan came out of his hiding spot, he made it to a nearby pool of water and drank at length. He was surely dehydrated, which was likely contributing to his weakness. The rescuers were able to put a leash around his neck to guide him to their car to see a vet. But Tarzan was too weak to walk. The rescuers did not hesitate. They picked him up and together carried him all the way to their car.

Tarzan was taken to a vet and given the attention he needed to get on the road to recovery. He was so relieved that he smiled in gratitude. Tarzan will now be able to find a family that will love and protect him like he deserves.

Matilda was just a puppy when she first arrived at the Douglas County Animal Shelter. Even though the tiny pit bull was being brought to the shelter, the staff couldn’t help but notice how happy she was. The little girl was so excitable that she couldn’t stop her tail from wagging.

Matilda’s bubbling exuberance threw shelter workers off guard. They couldn’t believe how friendly she was after her rough start in life. The sweet pup spent her first two months of life as a stray dog on the often unforgiving streets of Georgia. When she was discovered by shelter workers, her belly was full of worms and she had a terribly irritating skin condition.
